They need someone who shows up. Someone who believes in them. Someone who can help reading begin to feel possible.

Groves Literacy Partnerships and the Northside Achievement Zone are building a team of caring dependable literacy tutors to support approximately 100 students across three North Minneapolis partner schools.

Tutors will work consistently with the same students throughout the school year building strong relationships while delivering structured evidence-based literacy instruction.

This is more than an after-school contract. It is an opportunity to become one of the trusted adults who helps a child build confidence strengthen reading skills and begin to see what they are capable of.

The program is built around a simple but powerful idea: relationships first then instruction. Students will work with the same tutor each week because meaningful learning begins when children feel known safe and supported.

What Youll Do

As an After-School Literacy Tutor you will:

  • Build consistent encouraging relationships with a small group of students.
  • Provide literacy tutoring to students in pairs using a structured instructional model.
  • Support approximately 10 students organized into five tutoring pairs.
  • Deliver consistent tutoring sessions throughout the week.
  • Use curriculum instructional materials and progress-monitoring tools provided through the program.
  • Help students strengthen foundational reading skills including phonics phonemic awareness fluency and comprehension.
  • Communicate regularly with program and site contacts.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and fulfill all agreed-upon tutoring sessions.
  • Complete required orientation training and child-safety requirements.
  • Create an environment where students feel respected capable and excited to return.

The program model calls for each tutor to support approximately 10 students in five pairs with students receiving tutoring three times each week.

Contract Schedule

Tutoring is expected to take place:

  • Monday through Friday
  • Approximately 3:006:00 p.m.
  • Up to approximately 15 hours per week
  • Specific tutoring days student assignments and site schedules will be established based on program needs student enrollment transportation windows and site logistics.
  • Because consistency is central to the program selected contractors must be able to maintain their agreed-upon schedule throughout the contract period.

Contract Locations

Tutors will provide services at one of three North Minneapolis partner schools:

  • Lucy Laney Community School
  • Nellie Stone Johnson Community School
  • Ascension Catholic School

The program anticipates approximately three to four tutors at each site depending on final student enrollment and scheduling needs.

College students educators retired teachers paraprofessionals youth workers community members and people considering careers in education are encouraged to apply.

Program Resources and Preparation

Selected tutors will receive access to:

  • Structured literacy curriculum and instructional materials.
  • Orientation to Groves Literacy Partnerships and the NAZ community.
  • Training related to the programs instructional approach.
  • Site-specific procedures and expectations.
  • Child-safety professional-boundary and mandatory-reporting requirements.
  • Ongoing instructional guidance and program support.

The programs preparation model includes structured-literacy content school logistics child safety mandatory reporting and access to the curriculum and materials needed to begin tutoring.

Contract Terms

This is an independent contractor opportunity. Tutors will not be employees of Groves Learning Organization or the Northside Achievement Zone and will be responsible for their own tax obligations insurance and other responsibilities associated with independent contractor status.
