Primary Purpose:

To assist in the supervision care and instruction of students in the self-contained or regular classroom; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during non-classroom time; providing information to appropriate school personnel

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or hold a General Educational Development (GED) certificate
  • Have met formal academic assessment associates degree or two years of study at an institution of higher learning*
  • Valid educational aide certification**

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
  • Desire to assist students with special needs in a learning environment
  • Emotional maturity and stability necessary for the specialized work involved
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively

Experience:

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Performance Responsibilities

  1. Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced and outlined by certified staff as described by an IEP plan.

  2. Assists the certified staff in devising special strategies for reinforcing learning materials and skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students their needs interests and abilities.

  3. Help manage the behavior of assigned student(s). This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student as needed.

  4. Recognize differences in students special medical physical communicative and emotional needs and adapt methods and interaction according.

  5. Administers tests homework make-up work etc. for the purpose of assisting teacher in evaluating students progress and/or recognizing the individual needs of the student.

  6. Alerts the teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.

  7. Monitors and assists individual special education students in the classroom library playground activities community outings vocational sites public transportation system etc. for the purpose of ensuring the safety of assigned students.

  8. Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. rest rooms playgrounds hallways bus loading zones cafeteria parking lots etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of special education students.

  9. Provides direct instruction to students under the supervision of a certified teacher for the purpose of implementing IEP goals.

  10. Implements behavioral plans designed by the ARD committee for students with behavior disorders or other conditions for the purpose of assisting in meeting special education students needs and providing a consistent environment.

  11. Provides verbal and/or written feedback of observations for the purpose of assisting certified teachers for the purpose of assisting certified teachers in evaluating students.

  12. Administers first aid for the purpose of providing emergency or necessary care in accordance with district state and federal requirements.

  13. Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in school environment and community.

  14. Participates in in-service training programs as approved.

  15. Maintains safe working environment and encourages colleagues to be safety minded in the performance of all school-related duties.

  16. Be a positive role model for students; support mission of school district.

Tools/Equipment Used:Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; other specialized and adaptive equipment used by students

Lifting:Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); Occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) and positioning or students with physical disabilities controlling behavior through physical restraint assisting nonambulatory students and lifting and moving adaptive and other classroom equipment

Environment:Work inside and outside (exposure to sun heat cold and inclement weather); exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards (bacteria communicable diseases)

Mental Demands:Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress

*Required by Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) for aides who are providing instructional support in Title I Part A program.
