- Monitoring & Alerting: Proactively monitoring network health/ server performance disk space CPU/RAM utilization using tools like SolarWinds Nagios or PRTG to identify outages or performance drops.
- User & Access Management: Handling Active Directory (AD) tasks such as password resets unlocking accounts creating/modifying user profiles and managing Group Memberships.
- Incident Management: Acting as the first point of contact for network tickets. This involves acknowledging classifying and resolving or escalating issues within Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Basic Troubleshooting: Resolving common connectivity issues such as faulty cables port errors IP conflicts or VPN login failures.
- Backup Operations: Monitoring daily backup jobs (using tools like Veeam Veritas or Commvault) and performing basic file-level restores when requested.
- Hardware Maintenance: Assisting with rack and stack (physically installing routers and switches) cable management (patching) and labeling equipment.
- Documentation: Maintaining accurate logs of network changes inventorying assets (serial numbers models) and updating network diagrams.
- User Support: Providing remote or on-site support to end-users for basic network-related queries like Wi-Fi access or printer connectivity.
- Networking Fundamentals: A solid understanding of the OSI model TCP/IP DNS DHCP and Subnetting.
- Device Knowledge: Basic familiarity with Cisco Juniper or HP command-line interfaces (CLI) for simple configuration checks.
- Standard Protocols: Awareness of routing (OSPF BGP) and switching (VLANs STP) concepts.
- Tools: Experience with basic diagnostic commands like ping traceroute nslookup and netstat.
- Education: Usually a Bachelors degree in IT Computer Science or equivalent work experience (12 years).
- Communication:Essential for explaining technical issues to non-technical users.
- While Desktop Support focuses on the end-user device (laptops local apps) If a user cant login its desktop support: if the server that authenticates everyone is slow.
