Position Summary
The Sterilizer Technician performs preventative and corrective maintenance administrative duties and participates in continuous quality improvement.
Duties
- Establish and maintain a comprehensive preventative maintenance program for all decontamination sterilization and related equipment within the Medical Device Reprocessing Department and Operating Rooms in accordance with manufacturers standards and recommendations and in accordance with legislated requirements.
- Repair and maintain a variety of decontamination sterilization and associated monitoring equipment. This includes but is not limited to steam ethylene oxide Sterrad Steris 1 pasteurizer Sci Can ethylene oxide monitors washers and associated systems within the Medical Device Reprocessing Department and Operating Rooms.
- Install and/or repair pipes valves and fittings on equipment in accordance with manufacturers standards and recommendations.
- Troubleshoot associated electrical circuits microprocessors hydraulics and pneumatics and install and repair modules and components in accordance with manufacturers standards and recommendations.
- Provide written estimates on work related repairs and/or new construction projects as requested.
- Provide technical assistance and advice as directed by the MDRD Manager and/or Facilities Management Services Manager or designate.
- Adhere to the Departments established policies procedures objectives quality assurance and safety guidelines.
- Ensure that due diligence is exercised in the use of equipment and supplies.
- Maintain a level of expertise in all legislated requirements surrounding sterilization equipment maintenance and associated record keeping and insure Departmental compliance with such legislation.
- Insure coordination of work activities with various client groups in the efficient completion of assignments.
- Research specifications drawings operational and maintenance documentation to make repairs and adjustments as necessary.
- Keep work areas orderly clean and safe. Insure proper care in the use of equipment and supplies.
- Source parts and accessories as required from time to time to complete repairs.
- Maintain accurate and current maintenance records and preventative maintenance schedules and records for all decontamination sterilization and related equipment in accordance with manufacturers standards and recommendations and in accordance with legislated requirements.
- Maintain records and information pertinent to work assignments.
- Participates as an active member on relevant committees.
- Attends and participates in departmental and interdisciplinary meetings.
- Participates in the total learning experience for various student populations such as Medical Device students or Nursing students as required.
- Attends and/or participates in Professional Development seminars and courses.
- Keeps current with new and emerging technologies relevant to decontamination and sterilization and serves as a resource to the MDRD Team.
- Works with the MDRD Educator or designate regarding the implementation of new equipment/technology and/or processes.
Qualifications :
- At minimum completion of a community college certificate program or recognized equivalent required.
- Recent completion of one or more manufacturers certified training programs for sterilizers and/or related equipment strongly preferred
- Completion of a recognized Medical Device Reprocessing course an asset.
- Five years practical and Related experience required
- Steam and/or Ethylene Oxide Sterilizer maintenance
- Decontamination equipment maintenance
- Computer literacy required.
- Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines in accordance to UHN standards.
- Exercise initiative and good judgement with ability to multi-task.
- Compliance with confidentiality requirements
- Effective organizational interpersonal and communication skills
- Knowledge of applicable legislative UHN and/or departmental policies.
- Client service oriented with the ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different options background and characteristics bring richness to the challenge of situation at hand.
- Membership in MDRAO preferred.
