Tutoring Center Program Coordinator

The Opportunity: The Tutoring Center Program Coordinator supports student academic success at Skagit Valley College by providing one-on-one assistance in assigned subject areas. This position helps students to understand course concepts and assignments develop broad academic strategies and strengthen socioemotional competencies that affect coordination with the Director of Learning Resources the Program Coordinator also assists with tutor scheduling and attendance monitoring provides informal onboarding to new tutors and oversees center volunteers.

This is a non-permanent classified position working up to 25 hours per week on-site at the Mount Vernon Campus.

Tutoring

• Assists students in assigned subject areas adapting explanations and level of assistance to individual needs and prior knowledge to improve comprehension and retention of course material;
• Attends to students socioemotional needs by incorporating feedback strategies that promote motivation and productive engagement;
• Guides students toward self-directed learning by modeling thinking processes using effective questioning strategies and prioritizing course resources over direct answers.

• Maintains student session logs for tutoring sessions administered by the center to support continuity of services;
• Supplies the director with periodic TRIO session summaries to support recordkeeping;
• Provides new tutors with an informal overview of center operations policies and expectations;
• Confirms tutor subject-matter expertise with the director to support accurate scheduling;
• Monitors tutor attendance at scheduled sessions and follows up with the director when issues arise;
• Assists volunteers in maintaining compliance with college and center policies;
• Refers students to appropriate campus resources (e.g. counseling) when needs fall outside the scope of academic tutoring.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Considerable knowledge of STEM disciplines with depth in at least one subject area;
• Academic tutoring methods and best practices;
• Community college environment and the challenges facing college students.

• Clear oral and written communication adapting language to the needs of the audience;
• Accurate recordkeeping and routine administrative tasks.

• Recognition of and response to students experiencing academic difficulty or socioemotional distress including maintaining professional boundaries and making appropriate referrals;
• Adaptability in instructional approach based on individual student learning needs and preparation;
• Capacity for positive productive working relationships with students colleagues and volunteers;
• Sound independent judgment in day-to-day tutoring and program support activities.

Minimum Qualifications

• A bachelors degree in a STEM-related field;
• One (1) year of experience in a college-level tutoring or academic support setting. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted year-for-year for required education.

• Professional experience tutoring at the post-secondary level;
• Experience working with volunteers or coordinating the work of others in an academic support setting;
• Familiarity with learning management systems particularly Canvas.

Salary and Benefits:

• Salary is based on Range 45 Step A $23.61 per hour with periodic increments to $30.90 per hour.Starting salary may be dependent on education qualifications and experience. Salary and benefits are subject to change in accordance with legislative mandates and collective bargaining agreements.
• This position is eligible for overtime pay in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act and is dependent upon continued grant funding.
• This is a union-represented position subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
