This position is responsible for the overall safety and security of Montana Department of Corrections Transportation department. The Sergeant helps ensure the transportation department is operated for the safety of the public as well as the incarceration treatment and rehabilitation of the inmate population through supervising transportation staff and performing administrative duties.

  • Supervise offenders on and off property

  • Conducts thorough inspections and searches of inmates buildings and grounds

  • Performs security observation and inspection

  • Prepares documentation regarding institutional matters such as incident reports disciplinary documentation counts and logs

  • Operates security equipment

  • Recognizes critical behavior and provides intervention for offenders

  • Restrains and controls offenders

  • Responds to emergencies

  • Enforces and follows rules and regulations

  • Ensures offenders basic needs are met

  • Supervise and direct work of at least 2 FTE Correctional Officers within assigned area.

Maintain order discipline and security within assigned areas in accordance with relevant rules regualtions policies and laws.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma and Basic POST Certification is required.

  • Valid drivers license is required.

  • Two years correctional officer experience is preferred.

  • A knowledge of the functions procedures organization and governing laws and regulations of the corrections system and the prison modern security techniques record keeping procedures.

  • Skills in the use of modern security equipment de-escalating volatile situations and interacting with inmates effectively

PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER INFORMATION

This position requires POST Basic Certification after attending training at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy and successfully completing one year of employment with the Department of addition to the training and experience requirements to be POST Certified the successful candidate(s) must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States of America;

  • Be at least 18 years of age;

  • Be fingerprinted for a criminal history search;

  • Not have been convicted of a crime for which s/he could have been imprisoned in a federal or state penitentiary;

  • Be of good moral character as determined by a thorough background screen;

  • Be a high school graduate or issued a GED or its equivalent; AND

  • Possess or be eligible for a valid Montana drivers license.
