Job Summary

The Makerspace Supervisor (Technical Assistant III) blends student-facing instructional duties with technical supervisory and administrative responsibilities. The employee provides training maintains equipment manages shop operations and supports a safe inclusive learning environment for the makerspace community.

Essential Functions

Provides hands-on training and guidance to makerspace members on equipment use safety procedures and project development. Serves as the primary point of contact for students using makerspace resources fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment.

Oversees scheduling and supervision of student staff; manages communications tracks attendance and provides administrative support to ensure smooth operations.

Designs and implements improvements to shop layout equipment and workflow to enhance usability efficiency and safety. Supports programming and outreach through workshops and events that promote maker skills and community engagement.

Conducts routine machine maintenance and performs minor repairs; coordinates with manufacturers or technical staff for advanced issues. Trains and delegates equipment care tasks to student staff as appropriate.

Researches price checks orders and receives equipment and supplies using Buyways Concur and the UMass Bank Card. Maintains accurate inventory records.

Ensures makerspace cleanliness and organization; delegates upkeep tasks to student staff where appropriate.

Other Functions

Performs other duties as assigned to support the overall success of the Makerspace and its programs.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent with at least two (2) years of relevant experience.

Experience in academic makerspace studio workshop or laboratory environments.

Demonstrated ability to train and supervise students in the safe use of shop equipment.

Experience in fabrication and design.

Ability to work independently and productively with minimal supervision.

Strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with a diverse student population.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to balance concurrent projects.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with 3D printing laser cutting electronics and programming.

Experience with woodshop metal fabrication and CNC equipment.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in indoor and/or outdoor environments and requires frequent lifting bending tool use or equipment use. May involve work in confined spaces or at heights.

Work Schedule and Work Arrangement

18.75 hours per week; evenings and weekends.

Salary Information

Pay Grade:USA/MTA Grade 15
