This position is located within the Department of the Interior US Geological Survey NW-pacific Island Reg Field office SPOKANE VALLEY WASHINGTON.

Salary: $89974 (Step 01) to $116969 (Step 10)

The salary range listed is based on the associated General Schedule Locality pay tables as determined by the Locality Pay Area Definitions. See the Additional Information section for more information.


Duties

As a Supervisory Hydrologic Technician within the Idaho Water Science Center Upper Columbia-Idaho Field Office some of your specific duties will include:

  • Responsible for the technical and administrative supervision of a large and complex staff in professional technical clerical and administrative work to carry out the mission of the organization.
  • Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates; makes assignments based on capability and expertise; evaluates the subordinate supervisors performance and the performance of those employees reporting directly to him/her; gives advice or instruction to subordinates on work and administrative matters.
  • The incumbent shares the responsibility of IDWSCs engagement with the public and local partners. They supply pertinent water resources information to Federal State local and Tribal agencies through various channels including meetings briefings emails and phone communications.
  • The incumbent is responsible for planning and scheduling the construction and maintenance of 83 sites (including streamgages water-quality stations discrete monitoring locations and groundwater wells) and periodic groundwater and QW synoptics including hundreds of potential sites managed by their section of the Upper Columbia Idaho Field Office.

Physical Demands - The work regularly requires considerable dexterity agility and strenuous physical exertion such as: climbing and/or working from tall ladders and scaffolding; work in areas where footing is treacherous such as slippery riverbanks steep rocky terrain or fast-moving water; lifting heavy objects weighing 23 kilograms (50 pounds) or more or crouching or crawling in restricted areas.

Work Environment - Office conditions do not require special safety precautions; field conditions may include extreme heat or cold rain or snow possible aggressive wildlife encounters and hazardous conditions such as ice or flooding or exposure to irritant or toxic chemicals. Work may require the use of special clothing or gear such as masks coats boots goggles respirators or life jackets.

    Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position

    • Drivers License/Driving Record - You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record.
    • Pre-Employment Medical - Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.
    • Because this position requires travel for official business the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
    • A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicants successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

    Qualifications

    Applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level:
    One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include: planning directing and coordinating the collection computation analysis and quality assurance of water-resource data from a network of hydrologic monitoring stations; providing technical leadership and guidance to staff on hydrologic data-collection methods data review procedures and interpretation of complex hydrologic conditions; evaluating stage-discharge relations validating and analyzing hydrologic records resolving data anomalies and ensuring compliance with established technical standards; collecting and analyzing data required to compute flood flows using methods such as slope-area measurements flow over dams flow through culverts and flow over embankments; and supporting hydrologic investigations and studies involving streamflow floods droughts and other water-resource issues while ensuring the accuracy reliability and availability of hydrologic information.
