Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. This job class performs a variety of general grounds gardening and maintenance duties in the upkeep of assigned school site (s) and related areas. Positions in this job class may be assigned to a school site or to a groundskeeping crew who perform groundskeeping functions at various DUTIES:Plants cultivates prunes shapes trims waters and sprays trees shrubs hedges and plantsPlants fertilizes waters mows and cares for lawnsOperates hand and power tools and equipment including power mowers edgers trimmers sweepers and other grounds maintenanceUses hand tools to work soil and to remove weeds undergrowth and debris from school grounds and landscaped school and/or other District grounds clean; sweeps sidewalks and picks up paper rubbish and other debrisHoes and rakes weeds leaves and grass clippingsApplies pesticides and herbicides to grounds and garden areas for pest/weed control purposesDrives a pickup truck tractor and/or gang mower as assignedMaintains hoses supplies and tools in proper condition and repairPerforms minor service and repair work on groundskeeping equipment such as mowers edgers sprayers backpack blowers Assists in moving and arranging furniture and equipment for special events as assignedOperates repairs and adjusts heads on sprinkler systemsMows drags chalks lines and marks athletic field for scheduled eventsPerforms other duties similar to the above in scope and functionKNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:KNOWLEDGE OF:Groundskeeping and gardening methods and practicesSafe use maintenance and operation of groundskeeping tools power equipment and sprinkling systemsCare and use and application of pesticides and herbicides for pest/weed control purposeABILITY TO:Effectively and safely use hand and power tools associated with groundskeeping and gardening workRepair and adjust sprinkling systemsPerform minor maintenance and repair work on a variety of groundskeeping equipmentAbility to understand and follow both oral and written instructionsAbility to read and write at a level necessary to successfully perform required dutiesAbility to read and interpret basic blueprints and landscaping plansAbility to meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required dutiesAbility to establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required AND EXPERIENCE:PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:Heavy physical laborOutdoor environment exposure to elementsExposure to loud noise dust pollen and toxic chemicals and fertilizersLicenses and other requirements:Criminal Justice fingerprint clearanceEvidence of TB clearanceIf required to operate a vehicle:Valid California Motor Vehicle Operators LicenseAcceptable driving record and qualification for insurability by the Districts insurance carrier
