The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This position requires a data entry background. Functions performed may include but are not limited to A-station presort pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory imaging/microfilming centrifugation and aliquoting. All functions must be performed with confidence accuracy and in a timely manner. The job is complex and requires that the employee have good organization skills and is able to learn and understand specimen types related to test(s) ordered by the client. The SPT I must have the ability to learn and understand the compliance regulations related to test ordering which may change on a daily basis. This position is critical to quality for customer satisfaction. Additionally since many changes do occur from day to day great flexibility on the part of the SPT I is required. The SPT I will be exposed to many different demands made by the customer. The majority of SPT I work on the nightshift but based on staffing needs weekends holidays on-call and overtime availability is a requirement.

• Perform A-station presort pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory
• Perform imaging/microfilming centrifugation and aliquoting
• Execute all functions with confidence accuracy and in a timely manner
• Learn and understand specimen types related to test(s) ordered by the client
• Learn and understand the compliance regulations related to test ordering which may change on a daily basis
• Enter data at a rate of 6000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour
• Work in a biohazard environment practicing good safety habits
• Sit or stand for long periods as required by the production environment
• Communicate effectively with all levels of staff
• Adhere to core values safety and compliance policies and procedures
• Keep work area neat and clean
• Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills that foster a positive environment

• Medical background including medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory
• Previous laboratory experience
• Previous hospital laboratory experience
• Previous experience in a production environment

• High school diploma or equivalent (required)

• No experience required

• Previous laboratory experience preferred
• Previous hospital laboratory experience (a plus not required)
• Previous experience in a production environment preferred
• Medical background preferred including medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory

• Department is a production environment with emphasis on productivity/quality standards and departmental completion times
