PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

This role offers the opportunity to support the Manager Track Standards Design & Welding by developing practical cost-effective and customer-focused trackwork design solutions. It plays an important part in ensuring special trackwork is available when needed to support maintenance and construction activities.

In this position you will help create trackwork designs special trackwork plans and related maintenance requirements that support ongoing and future track maintenance programs capital projects and customer facility initiatives. You will also contribute to safe efficient and reliable railway operations by ensuring designs and plans align with applicable regulatory standards including those established by Transport Canada the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and Mexican railway authorities.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Support the development design and drafting of standard and special trackwork plans including diamond crossings turnouts tie plates joint bars hand tools and related track components using AutoCAD
  • Contribute to design improvements for special trackwork track components and standard track-related materials
  • Review and verify special trackwork plans including submissions from external manufacturers for approval
  • Partner with suppliers to review manufacturing processes support quality standards and help ensure new track materials meet requirements
  • Develop bills of materials component descriptions standards and maintenance requirements to support manufacturing and track maintenance activities
  • Provide technical guidance problem-solving support and practical assistance to field and shop employees
  • Assist with investigations of failed track materials and recommend corrective actions to support continuous product improvement
  • Collaborate with Sourcing and Procurement to help reduce inventory levels and material costs attend field locations as needed and complete other duties as assigned

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Degree or diploma in Civil or Mechanical Engineering Engineering Technology or equivalent experience; additional qualifications in Metallurgy or Engineering Design are considered an asset
  • Two to four years of technical design and/or drafting experience preferably in railway trackwork or related infrastructure environments
  • AutoCAD experience is required; experience with 3D design and modeling is preferred
  • Knowledge of material properties mechanics welding practical hands-on work and operational problem-solving environments are considered assets
  • Strong problem-solving teamwork interpersonal and document control/management skills
  • hold a valid full Class 5 drivers permit and maintain a passport for travel to Canadaand Mexico
  • Ability to work primarily in an office setting travel as required respond to occasional after-hours or weekend calls

Medical and Drug Testing

This is a safety sensitive position and a successful pre-employment medical assessment including physical vision hearing and a negative company drug test is required. Post hire qualification drug testing may also be required.

Management Conductor Program

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
