Job Summary
GXM is seeking a Senior Technology Scout - Emerging Technology & Market Intelligence to support advanced defense and space-related mission programs focused on Command and Control (C2) mission modernization and the rapid identification and adoption of commercial and emerging technologies.
The selected candidate will continuously explore the commercial technology landscape to identify emerging technologies companies products and market developments that may address validated mission needs capability gaps and operational challenges. This individual will research technology markets identify promising commercial and nontraditional providers engage companies and innovation ecosystems and translate findings into actionable insights for Government and program leadership.
The role requires a strong ability to quickly understand unfamiliar technologies distinguish substantive capabilities from market hype identify meaningful industry and technology trends and assess the potential relevance of emerging solutions to defense and space missions. The ideal candidate combines technology curiosity market awareness analytical judgment and strong communication skills with enough technical fluency to engage credibly with founders engineers Government technical personnel and operational stakeholders.
A formal engineering background is valuable but is not the primary requirement for this position. Successful candidates may come from technology scouting defense innovation commercial technology assessment venture or investment diligence market intelligence strategic technology research technical consulting systems engineering or related environments.
Relevant technology areas may include commercial space space domain awareness C2 and common operating picture technologies cloud and edge computing DevSecOps software data platforms artificial intelligence and machine learning networking cybersecurity infrastructure autonomy and other emerging technologies applicable to defense and national security missions.
This role is onsite in Colorado Springs CO. Hybrid flexibility may be available based on mission requirements and program needs.
Responsibilities
Continuously scout the commercial and emerging technology landscape to identify technologies companies products and market developments that may address defense space C2 data operational and enterprise mission needs.
Translate validated mission needs operational use cases capability gaps and technical requirements into focused technology scouting priorities research questions search areas and evaluation criteria.
Identify and research startups scale-ups nontraditional defense companies established commercial providers research organizations and other emerging market participants with potentially relevant capabilities.
Monitor technology and market developments including new product launches company growth venture investment activity strategic partnerships acquisitions research breakthroughs Government innovation activity and other indicators of meaningful change within priority technology areas.
Develop and maintain technology landscapes company profiles market maps scouting pipelines comparative assessments and other structured intelligence products that provide visibility into relevant technologies and market participants.
Evaluate candidate technologies and companies for mission relevance maturity differentiation potential operational value scalability deployment considerations security implications integration complexity and potential barriers to Government adoption.
Conduct structured market assessments technology comparisons commercial capability reviews and other analyses to help Government and program leadership understand available solutions and emerging alternatives.
Engage directly with technology companies founders technical leaders research organizations venture-backed companies accelerators investors Government innovation organizations and other ecosystem participants to understand capabilities product direction maturity and potential mission applications.
Build and maintain awareness of key companies market movers emerging technology clusters and innovation ecosystems relevant to defense and national security missions.
Participate in industry conferences technology demonstrations innovation events pitch events technical exchanges and other forums to identify emerging capabilities and expand awareness of relevant commercial markets.
Rapidly develop working knowledge of unfamiliar technologies and ask informed questions that help determine whether a capability warrants deeper technical operational or acquisition evaluation.
Partner with systems engineers enterprise and solution architects software and DevSecOps teams data engineers cybersecurity personnel operational users and other subject matter experts to evaluate the technical feasibility and integration considerations associated with promising technologies.
Support technical demonstrations prototypes experiments and evaluations designed to validate whether candidate technologies can address defined mission needs and operational use cases.
Develop concise technology scouting reports company assessments market intelligence products decision briefs comparative analyses and recommendations for Government and program leadership.
Clearly communicate why an emerging technology or company matters where it may create mission value what risks or limitations exist and what additional diligence or technical evaluation should occur before further investment or adoption.
U.S. Citizen with active TS/SCI clearance.
Bachelors degree in Engineering Computer Science Information Systems Business Economics Technology Management or another relevant discipline. Equivalent relevant professional experience may be considered.
8 years of relevant professional experience in technology engineering innovation or related environments or 57 years with directly relevant experience in defense innovation (DIU/AFWERX) technology scouting venture or investment diligence (VC/PE) commercial technology assessment or innovation consulting.
Demonstrated experience identifying researching evaluating or engaging emerging technology companies startups commercial technology providers research organizations or innovation ecosystems.
Demonstrated ability to research unfamiliar technology markets identify relevant companies and capabilities synthesize large amounts of information and identify meaningful trends differentiators risks and opportunities.
Ability to rapidly understand new technologies and explain their capabilities limitations maturity potential applications competitive positioning and mission relevance to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
Experience conducting technology comparisons market assessments company research commercial capability evaluations technical diligence competitive analysis or similar structured assessments.
Sufficient technical fluency to engage credibly with engineers vendors technical leaders and Government stakeholders and to understand major technical considerations associated with emerging technologies.
Strong research analytical writing briefing and communication skills with the ability to turn complex technology and market information into concise and actionable recommendations.
Demonstrated intellectual curiosity and a strong interest in staying current on emerging technologies companies commercial markets and innovation trends.
Ability to operate effectively across Government industry commercial technology engineering operational and innovation communities.
Desired Qualifications
Experience supporting defense space intelligence Combatant Command or multi-domain C2 environments and familiarity with operational mission systems and modernization challenges.
Experience within or supporting defense innovation organizations commercial technology accelerators venture capital organizations corporate innovation teams research organizations or other technology scouting environments.
Existing relationships within commercial technology startup venture research or Government innovation ecosystems.
Experience conducting technical or commercial diligence of early-stage venture-backed or nontraditional technology companies.
Technical experience in one or more relevant technology areas such as commercial space space domain awareness C2 systems cloud and edge computing DevSecOps software data platforms AI/ML networking cybersecurity autonomy infrastructure or systems integration.
Experience supporting rapid prototyping experimentation Other Transaction Authority (OTA) efforts commercial capability insertion technology transition or other rapid acquisition and innovation activities.
Experience evaluating technology maturity technical risk integration considerations security implications or barriers to Government adoption.
