Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) job highlights:

What youll do:

Working as a paramedic every shift is guaranteed to be different. Some of the most challenging things you will face will include working effectively with a team in emotionally charged situations communicating with distressed family and bystanders clearly documenting complex events and practicing diplomacy and empathy when your role may be misunderstood. Some situations will be unpredictable and demand independent quick decisions where there may not be a clear right this role you can expect to:

  • Provide patient care and transportation by ambulance in pre-hospital emergency situations always using critical thinking and safe work practices.
  • Advocate for patients through effective communication with colleagues allied health care professionals and public safety partners.
  • Be responsible for the safe operation of ambulances.
  • Identify issues and strategies to address complex program or system-wide issues which will enhance service delivery and patient care.

What you bring:

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 19 years of age
  • Current PCP license to practice in the province of British Columbia (issued by EMALB); those with anEMRlicenseissued by EMALBare also encouraged to apply.
    • Must be issued on or before the posting closing date.
  • Class 1 2 or 4 BC drivers license (or out of province equivalent) or the ability to obtain within 6 months from your start date.
  • Current drivers abstract demonstrating a safe driving record.
  • Work permit for Canada (or able to obtain).
  • Strong mental resiliency and maturity; highly functional in a dynamic environment
  • This role requires extensive interaction with English-speaking public and colleagues and writing reports in English.
  • Any eligible EMR licensed applicants that do not have a PCP license and who accept full-time or regular part-time PCP-level paramedic positions will be required to successfully complete paid PCP training as a condition of employment along with a three (3) year return of service.
    You will be required to enroll and complete education at the earliest possible opportunity once approved for employer-funded education.
    It is the applicants responsibility to ensure they meet the schools pre-requisite requirements for enrollment of PCP programs.
    • Those candidates who engage in PCP training after the posting closure date and before hire will not be eligible for these positions.

Indigenous Cultural Safety and Diversity

  • Knowledge of Canadian colonial impacts on Indigenous people in social and health contexts supported by significant knowledge of Canadian and Indigenous ideologies including knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultural safety cultural humility Indigenous-specific racism and anti-racism.
  • Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commissions 94 Calls to Action (2015) In Plain Site Report (2020) BCs Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019) and Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls calls for justice and how they intersect across the health care system.
  • Supports team members on their learning journey ensuring education strategy for team/department to implement Indigenous Cultural Safety at a practical level.
  • Works collaboratively with appropriate Indigenous teams/departments to ensure ICS lens applied holistically.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BCs Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • Knowledge of social economic political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA TRC etc.)

Selection Process

BCEHS must first give preference to qualified internal applicants before we are able to consider qualified external applicants.

Formal interviews with shortlisted candidates will be arranged and candidates will be required to successfully complete reference checks a criminal record check and a physical capacity assessment. Canadians and those eligible to work in Canada will be considered before international applicants.

Successful applicants will have up to 61 days to report to British Columbia to attend an 8-day training and orientation program. Successful completion is part of an employees probation and is a pre-requisite to working on ambulance or being scheduled in the station.
