Position Summary
TheRecreation & Activities Director leads programs that helpyouthteensandmove play build skills develop confidence andexperience belongingthrough recreation and physical activity. Rather than focusingsolelyon competitive leagues this position creates accessible developmentallyappropriate opportunitiesforparticipantsto try new activities build foundational athletic skills havefunand connect with others.
The Director builds strong relationships with schools parks sports organizations and other community partners to understand community needsidentifygapsand expand access to facilitiesexpertiseand opportunities forrecreation and physical activity. Programs may include skill development clinics camps open recreation game days outdoor experiences family activities competitive leaguesdevelopmentalandfunctionalsports offerings based on community Director may alsoidentifyand explore opportunities for adult and family recreation based on community needs organizationalcapacityand alignment with existing YMCA programs.
Essential Functions
Recreation Movement & Skill Development
Create welcoming developmentallyappropriate opportunitiesfor youth of all abilities and experience levels totry new activities discover interests and build foundational athletic skillsthrough sports games relays obstacle courses teamchallengesand creative movement.
Developclinics camps Game Days skill-development sessions open recreation developmentalsportsand other active-play experiencesbased on community needs participantinterestsand organizational capacity.
Design a range of experiences that allow youth tobuild skills and grow in confidence from low-barrier introductory opportunities to ongoing and seasonal programs that encourage continued participation.
Develop seasonal opportunities that introduce youth to new activities or help themprepare for upcoming community or school recreation seasons.
Develop andoperaterecreational and competitive leagues or other team-based experiencesbased on community needs and organizational capacity with an emphasis onskill development participation confidence sportsmanshipbelongingand fun.
Regularly assess and adapt the program portfolio based onparticipation family feedback communityneedsand organizational capacity.
Identify and explore opportunities for adult and family recreation and physical activity based on community needs participant interests organizational capacity and alignment with existing YMCA programs.
Community Partnerships & Access
Build relationships withschools parks and recreation agencies sportsorganizationsand other community partnerstoidentifycommunity needsgapsand partnership opportunities.
Create pathways that connect youth to continued recreation and sports opportunities in the community andidentifyopportunities touse community facilities and spaces to expand access to YMCA recreation programs.
Safety Risk Management & Program Quality
Ensure all programs staffvolunteersand partnerscomply withYMCA child protection practices organizational policies applicable regulations mandatory reportingrequirementsand established safety standards.
Assess and manage risk for programs activities locations and partnerships includingappropriatesupervision check-in/check-out emergencyproceduresand parent/caregiver communication.
Ensure facilities fieldsequipmentand program spaces areappropriateand safelymaintained including systems forinspection inventory storagemaintenanceand replacement of equipment.
Respond appropriately toinjuriesincidentsand safety concerns ensuring required documentation communication follow-upand corrective action are completed.
Administration & Financial Management
Develop and manageprogram budgets pricing financialassistancestrategiespurchasingand expensestosupport bothfinancial sustainability and access.
Manage program administration includingregistration rosters schedules waivers participantrecordsand required documentation.
Develop program calendars and coordinatefacilities staffingequipmentand other resourcesto support effective program delivery.
Track and regularly report key measures includingenrollment capacity attendance repeat participation financialperformanceand participant/family experienceto inform program decisions.
Maintain centralizedprogram standards curricula/activity plans procedures and resourcesthat support consistent program quality staffdevelopmentand continuity.
Collaborate across YMCA departments toshare resources andexpertise coordinate programming and communication andidentifyopportunities to expand recreation experiences for participants and families.
Mustmaintaina current valid Oregon drivers license a DMV driving record that meets YMCA standards and evidence of insurability throughout entire term of employment
Perform other duties as assigned.
Staff & Volunteer Leadership
Recruit onboard train superviseevaluateand developstaff and volunteersto deliver safeengagingand consistent recreation experiences.
Ensure staff and volunteers complete requiredscreening child protection trainingcertificationsand role-specific preparationbefore working with participants.
Provide staff and volunteers with clearprogram expectations activity plans safetyproceduresand ongoing coaching and support.
Lead or support programs and activities as needed tomodel program quality supportstaffand respond to operational needs.
Minimum Qualifications
At least2years of relevant educationcourseworktrainingor professionaldevelopmentbeyond high school
At least 4-½ yearsof experience developing or leadingengaging developmentallyappropriate recreation physical activity camp sports out-of-school-timeorother activeprogramsforyouthwithvarying interestsabilitiesand levels of experience.
At least 1-½ years ofexperienceleadingsupervisingtrainingand supporting staff and/or volunteerswho work with children and teens.
Previousexperience coordinating multiple aspects of program operations includingstaffing scheduling facilitiesregistrationand/or budgets.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelors degree inrecreation youth development education physical education sports management or a related field or equivalent relevant experience
Experience developing or expandingyouth recreation physical activity or community-based programs and partnerships
Knowledge or experience across multiple areas ofrecreation sports outdoor activity physicaleducationor youth development
Experience developing recreation or physical activity opportunities for adults and/or families.
Previousexperience leading sports or recreational activities at a YMCA
Conversational fluency in Spanish
