Ethicon was founded more than 80 years ago as a pioneer in suture development and manufacturing helping to transform the safety and effectiveness of open surgery. The Ethicon business offers a broad range of products platforms and technologies includingsutures hemostasis products surgical staplers trocars energy devices and synthetic mesh devicesthat are used in a wide variety of minimally-invasive and open surgical procedures. Ethicon Inc.a member of Johnson & Johnsons family of companies located in Raritan NJis recruiting for a 2027 co-op in the area of Wound Closure and this role the Co-op/Intern will join a collaborative team of scientists and engineers which support new product development aimed at addressing unmet needs in wound closure with particular emphasis on antibacterial technologies and cardiovascular surgery.
Key Responsibilities
- Day-to-day responsibilities may include the following:
- Hands-on laboratory work in engineering laboratories
- Utilizing bespoke machining processes for novel medical device builds and evaluation
- Attending and participating in Voice-of-Customer (VOC) labs with surgeons
- Working with teams to design key project studies
- Testing and characterization of prototype devices and competitive products
- Good documentation practices including writing test protocols generating final reports and documenting meeting minutes
- Collaborating with engineers and outside suppliers to support project related activities
- Generating 3D Models and 3D printing them to support/develop test methods and fixtures
Qualifications
Required:
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
- Must have transportation to and from work daily
- Ability to relocate to work on site in a laboratory environment
- Completion of at least a first year of undergraduate academic program
- Must be able to balance multiple projects and maintain organization
- Must have the ability to work individually as well as on a team
- Must have good interpersonal and communication skills
- Must be proficient with Microsoft Office including Word PowerPoint SharePoint Excel
- Co-Op Terms: January to July/August 2027 OR May/June to December dates are flexible to accommodate academic calendars.
- Intern Terms: May/June to August 2027. Start/End dates are flexible to accommodate academic calendars.
- Ability to work full-time (40 hrs/week) during the Co-op / Internship term
Education:
- Candidates must be actively enrolled in an accredited University for the duration of the Internship assignment pursuing a Bachelors or Masters degree.
- A minimum GPA of 2.8 is required but a GPA of 3.0 or higher is strongly preferred
- The following disciplines are preferred: Mechanical Engineering Biomedical Engineering Materials Science Chemical Engineering
- Must either be Sophomore Junior or Senior students in the active school year.
Experience and Skills:
- Ability to work closely with technical and non-technical personnel
- Excellent communication skills
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills intellectual curiosity and a dedication to delivering the highest quality of work with attention to detail
- High level of organization and ability to balance multiple projects/initiatives while achieving results
- Must be a self-starter. Comfortable working both independently and with a team.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :
$23.50/hr to $52.50/hrAdditional Description for Pay Transparency:
The expected pay range for this position is between $23.50 per hour and $52.50 per hour but will be based on candidates program year discipline degree and/or -Ops/Interns are eligible to participate in Company sponsored employee medical benefits in accordance with the terms of the -Ops and Interns are eligible for the following sick time benefits: up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington up to 56 hours per calendar -Ops and Interns are eligible to participate in the Companys consolidated retirement plan (pension).
