Quality Control Technician

Position Value Proposition

Working for a world class leader in building structures a Schuff Steel QC Technician brings his/her expertise and knowledge in steel erection to build some of the most complex and high-profile projects in the commercial building and industrial sectors. This position is responsible for processing and interpreting 3D scan data of steel assemblies identifying dimensional discrepancies and documenting findings in a technical report. The QC Technician uses a high degree of proficiency while utilizing full skills of the trade including knowledge of codes and standards to verify that the final work is free of defects and meets the requirements of the contract documents. To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each core responsibility satisfactorily.

Core Responsibilities

• Review process and interpret 3D scan data of fabricated steel assemblies.
• Compare scan results against drawings models specifications and established tolerances.
• Identify evaluate and document dimensional discrepancies and areas of nonconformance.
• Determine whether observed deviations fall within specified acceptable tolerances.
• Compile inspection findings into clear accurate and complete PDF reports.
• Review completed reports for accuracy completeness and consistency.
• Exhibit good judgment in decision-making input and issue escalation; facilitate problem solving.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Organize digital inspection files scan data model drawings reports and supporting documents.
• Maintain accurate records and support traceability of inspection results.
• Review and understand shop and erection drawings details and installation instructions.
• Review and understand contract Specifications scope of work and exclusions outlined in the contract and related industry standards (i.e. ASTM AWS AISC CBC.)

Education/Training - Work Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) Minimum of three (3) years of experience. Completion of a verifiable vocational or training program may substitute for 1 year of experience. Bachelors degree in engineering construction science or equivalent may substitute for 3 years work experience.

Specialized Knowledge Qualifications

As outlined in the Core Competencies an individual must have thorough knowledge and an advanced understanding of each competency outlined above in order to carry out the essential functions of this position.

• Ability to learn and effectively use varying inspection technologies; 3D laser scanning point-cloud data AR/VR headsets and inspection software.
• Proficient computer skills and comfort working with digital files and technical software.
• Ability to read and interpret structural steel blueprints;
• Strong organizational and file-management skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to work independently or collaboratively while following established procedures.

Software & Technology

• Computer software includes: MS Word MS Excel MS Outlook Kronos Bluebeam Smartsheet etc.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

This position requires extended periods of computer use and close attention to technical information displayed on one or more monitors. Occasional time may be spent in the production or fabrication area to review steel assemblies gather information or offer support needed to complete scan report. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required:

• Regularly required to stand and/or sit; use hands to finger handle or feel; reach outward and above shoulders with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
• Frequently is required to walk and stoop bend kneel squat crouch or crawl.
• Occasionally required to climb or balance.
• Must occasionally lift carry and/or move up to 75 lbs.
• Occasionally push and/or pull a maximum force of 200 ft-lb.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision peripheral vision color depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
• Mental and visual application required to interpret drawings layout and plan work.
• Good judgment in determining best method and procedure to be followed.
• Work on jobs while applying safety rules at all times. SAFETY is priority one at all times!!!
• Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) ((Hard Hat Steel toed boots Safety glasses gloves ear plugs long pants long sleeved shirt respirator etc.. per requirements for position)
