SCS Engineers is seeking an accomplished Project Director Solid Waste to provide technical leadership project oversight staff mentorship client development and strategic direction for its growing South Florida solid waste practice.
This is a senior-level leadership opportunity for an experienced solid waste consulting professional who wants to lead significant projects strengthen client relationships develop emerging professionals and contribute directly to the financial and operational success of a nationally recognized environmental engineering firm.
The Project Director will oversee projects involving landfill design and permitting landfill gas collection and control systems landfill infrastructure transfer stations composting facilities industrial wastewater stormwater management air compliance construction and operational support.

Position Overview
As Project Director you will combine technical expertise with project client staff and business leadership. You will guide complex assignments from initial planning and regulatory strategy through design permitting construction and operational support.
This position requires someone who can evaluate challenging engineering and regulatory issues develop practical solutions guide multidisciplinary teams and communicate effectively with clients contractors regulators and internal leadership.
You will also be responsible for helping projects and client relationships achieve established goals related to revenue profitability quality schedule and client satisfaction.
Primary Responsibilities
Technical and Engineering Leadership
Provide senior-level technical leadership for complex solid waste and environmental engineering projects.
Apply advanced engineering and scientific principles to projects involving:
Municipal solid waste landfills
Landfill expansions and new cell development
Landfill closure and post-closure systems
Landfill gas collection and control systems
Landfill gas migration and methane monitoring
Renewable natural gas and beneficial-use projects
Leachate collection and management systems
Transfer stations
Material recovery facilities
Composting and organics-management facilities
Industrial wastewater systems
Stormwater permitting and design
Air-quality and emissions compliance
Landfill infrastructure and operational improvements
Oversee the preparation of engineering calculations design plans specifications reports permit applications construction documents and technical studies.
Provide technical guidance on unusual or complex engineering operational environmental and regulatory challenges.
Evaluate design alternatives and recommend practical constructible and cost-effective solutions.
Serve as Engineer of Record or senior technical reviewer when appropriate.
Maintain awareness of evolving solid waste regulations engineering practices environmental requirements and industry technologies.
Project and Program Management
Lead multiple projects and client programs from initial scope development through design permitting construction and closeout.
Establish project scopes schedules budgets staffing plans technical approaches and quality expectations.
Monitor project financial performance including revenue backlog profitability invoicing collections and resource allocation.
Identify project risks and implement appropriate technical contractual scheduling and financial controls.
Coordinate multidisciplinary teams of engineers scientists project managers designers GIS professionals CAD technicians and field personnel.
Help ensure projects are completed safely accurately on schedule and within budget.
Oversee construction-phase services contractor coordination submittal reviews field observations and construction quality assurance activities.
Maintain accountability for project quality profitability and client satisfaction.
Quality Assurance and Quality Control
Perform or oversee senior-level quality-control reviews of:
Engineering reports
Design calculations
Construction plans
Technical specifications
Permit applications
Regulatory submittals
Data evaluations
Cost estimates
Construction documents
Confirm that work products meet applicable technical standards regulatory requirements contractual obligations and internal quality procedures.
Provide constructive technical feedback to project teams and help improve consistency across work products.
Coordinate with CAD and GIS personnel to develop accurate plans figures exhibits and project documentation.
Use or provide direction regarding AutoCAD Civil 3D ArcGIS or related design and mapping platforms.
Client Leadership
Serve as a trusted senior advisor to municipal agencies private waste companies facility owners developers contractors and other clients.
Lead client meetings technical presentations regulatory discussions project reviews and strategic planning sessions.
Understand each clients operational financial regulatory and long-term infrastructure objectives.
Develop solutions that balance regulatory compliance operational performance environmental protection constructability and cost.
Maintain regular communication regarding project status budgets schedules risks and recommended actions.
Strengthen existing relationships and position SCS Engineers for repeat assignments and long-term partnerships.
Business Development and Practice Growth
Identify and pursue new solid waste and environmental consulting opportunities throughout South Florida.
Develop and implement client-development strategies in coordination with local regional and national leadership.
Lead or support proposal preparation scope development fee negotiations interviews and contract discussions.
Build relationships with prospective municipal and private-sector clients.
Represent SCS Engineers at conferences trade shows professional organizations client events and industry meetings.
Monitor market activity capital improvement programs regulatory changes and competitor positioning.
Help establish revenue backlog profitability and growth goals for the practice.
Contribute to strategic hiring succession planning workload forecasting and market expansion.
Staff Leadership and Mentorship
Lead mentor and develop engineers scientists technical professionals and project managers.
Provide technical guidance career coaching and performance feedback.
Help junior and mid-level professionals develop stronger technical project-management and client-facing capabilities.
Support staffing decisions workload planning recruitment onboarding and employee retention.
Promote collaboration accountability professional development and knowledge sharing.
Help create a team environment consistent with SCS Engineers principles of trust care and growth.
Required Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering Environmental Engineering Geotechnical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
At least 12 years of relevant professional experience within the solid waste industry.
Minimum of two years of environmental or engineering consulting experience.
Active Professional Engineer or Professional Geologist registration.
Florida PE or PG registration preferred; candidates licensed in another state must be able to obtain Florida reciprocity within six months.
Demonstrated experience with one or more of the following:
Landfill design and permitting
Landfill gas management
Landfill gas collection and control systems
Air-quality and emissions compliance
Landfill infrastructure
Landfill operational support
Transfer stations
Composting facilities
Industrial wastewater
Stormwater permitting and design
Experience leading technical teams and multidisciplinary projects.

Strong technical writing presentation negotiation leadership and client-communication skills.

Valid drivers license and driving record in good standing.
Preferred Qualifications
Florida Professional Engineer registration in Civil Environmental or Geotechnical Engineering.
Established relationships within the South Florida solid waste municipal environmental or infrastructure market.
Experience serving as Engineer of Record for solid waste projects.
Experience managing multiple major projects or long-term client programs.
Demonstrated success developing business and securing new consulting assignments.
Experience preparing and negotiating proposals scopes budgets and professional-services agreements.
Existing relationships with municipal solid waste authorities counties cities private waste companies or facility operators.
Knowledge of Florida Department of Environmental Protection requirements and local permitting processes.
Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D ArcGIS or related design and mapping software.
Experience with renewable natural gas methane-emissions reduction beneficial-use systems organics management or other climate-related infrastructure.
