What Youll Do as a Phlebotomist

• Collectvenous and/or capillary blood specimenson neonatal pediatric and adult patients both at the bedside and in the outpatient area.
• Apply working knowledge of thecirculatory system venipuncture technique and medical terminologyto ensure safe accurate collections.
• Communicate effectively with patients families visitors colleagues physicians leadership and volunteers.
• Respond quickly and accuratelyto emergencies and changes in patient condition.
• Support top-tier outcomes for patient experience quality and safety.
• Approach work with a bias for action efficiency and personal accountability modeling UNC Health Appalachians Mission Vision and Values.

Qualifications

• Education:
  • High school graduate with formal training or on-the-job training sufficient to qualify for certification as a Phlebotomist.
• Experience:
  • Minimum of 100 successful venipunctures and 50 capillary collections completed during training.
  • Previous experience as a phlebotomist preferred.
• Licensure/Certifications:
  • Successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy program or documented on-the-job training with a minimum of 100 successful venipunctures and 50 capillary collections.
  • Phlebotomist certification through an accredited testing agency preferred but not required.
  • National certification preferred but not required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association required at time of hire.
• Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong communication skills; ability to work within the chain of command using positive verbal and non-verbal techniques.
  • Competence in processing specimens safely and effectively within the limits of certification and hospital policy.
  • Exceptional customer service for patients families staff and physicians.
  • Proficiency with laboratory computer programs; ability to type at least 25 WPM.

Physical & Work Environment

• Continuous standing and walking often8 hours per shift; frequent bending squatting twisting turning and reaching.
• Frequently lift carry push or pull50 lbs; manual dexterity and mobility required.
• Frequent hand finger and wrist repetition;near visual acuityand close eye work; speaking reading and writing for extended periods.
• Regular exposure tobloodborne pathogens chemicals reagents and laboratory specimens.
• Exposure to hazards from electrical/mechanical equipment and toionizing/nonionizing radiation(including x-ray and microwave).
• Subject to irregular hours (days evenings nights weekends holidays) and emergencies.
