The ideal candidate will be a licensed professional with extensive knowledge of boilers HVAC systems electrical equipment and safety regulations. The Operating Engineer will serve as a senior-level licensed professional responsible for the operation maintenance and repair of complex building mechanical systems. This position requires a high level of technical expertise autonomy and the ability to provide oversight and guidance to junior engineers. Principal responsibilities will include but are not limited to:Operate monitor and maintain boilers HVAC systems chillers cooling towers and associated mechanical equipment to ensure optimal performance and efficiencyPerform routine inspections preventive maintenance and repairs on electrical equipment pumps motors and building automation systemsTroubleshoot and diagnose mechanical electrical and HVAC system failures implementing effective solutions to minimize downtimeMonitor and adjust building systems to maintain proper temperature humidity and air quality levels throughout the facilityEnsure compliance with all safety regulations building codes and environmental standards in the operation of mechanical systemsMaintain accurate logs and records of equipment operation maintenance activities and system performanceRespond to emergency situations involving mechanical or electrical system failures including after-hours and weekend calls as neededConduct safety inspections and ensure all equipment operates within established safety parametersProvide technical guidance and oversight to junior engineers and maintenance staffCoordinate with contractors and vendors for specialized repairs installations and system upgradesManage energy conservation initiatives to optimize building efficiency and reduce operational costsParticipate in the development and implementation of preventive maintenance programsEnsure proper inventory levels of parts supplies and materials necessary for equipment maintenance and repairEducation and Experience:Required:High School Diploma or equivalent; Technical school or vocational training in building systems HVAC or mechanical engineering preferredValid 3rd Class Steam and Hot Water Heating Boiler Engineer license (DC jurisdiction) or ability to obtain upon hireMinimum 3 years of experience in Engineering Services or facility operationsClearance Requirement:Active Top Secret security clearanceRequired Skills and Competencies:Comprehensive knowledge of boiler operations HVAC systems and building mechanical equipmentStrong understanding of electrical systems controls and building automation systems (BAS)Extensive knowledge of safety regulations OSHA standards and environmental compliance requirementsProven ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical problems and implement effective solutionsStrong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detailAbility to read and interpret blueprints schematics technical manuals and system diagramsProficiency in using diagnostic tools testing equipment and maintenance softwareExcellent written and verbal communication skills to document work and coordinate with team members and managementPhysical ability to perform manual labor lift equipment up to 50 lbs climb ladders and work in confined spacesAbility to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgment in decision-makingStrong organizational and time management skills to prioritize multiple tasks and emergency situationsFlexibility to work various shifts respond to emergency calls and provide on-call support as neededCommitment to maintaining a safe work environment and following all safety protocolsDesired Skills and Competencies:Experience working in federal government facilities or supporting government contractsHigher-class engineering license (2nd Class or 1st Class Boiler Engineer license)EPA Universal CFC certification for refrigerant handlingExperience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)Knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS) such as Johnson Controls Trane or SiemensCertifications in HVAC electrical systems or related building tradesExperience with energy management and sustainability initiativesSupervisory or leadership experience overseeing engineering or maintenance teamsExperience working in secure or classified environmentsOur Equal Employment Opportunity PolicyThe company is an equal opportunity employer.
