Online Learning Student Assistant (Student Worker)

Founded in 1966 as part of the prestigious State University of New York (SUNY) Genesee Community College serves a 2500 square mile region in the counties of Genesee Livingston Orleans and Wyoming. GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

The Student Assistant in the Online Learning office will focus on: student retention through outreach efforts triage foot traffic in the office (greeting and assisting faculty staff students and community members as needed). The student will interact via phone calls mailings virtual events and discussions in virtual community spaces. This position may also work with digital video and VR content special projects and routine office functions.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following are typical responsibilities associated with this position. The specific responsibilities may vary and will be assigned accordingly by the supervisor.

• Make phone calls and assist with mailings to new online students
• Assist with open house/orientation activities both virtually and in-person
• Monitor and participate in Online Learning virtual student communities
• Assist students with Brightspace Microsoft 365 and college email use
• Optionally assist in the development of Online Learning content videos and VR spaces
• Assist Online Learning staff with various projects

SKILLS REQUIRED:

• Customer service-oriented with excellent phone communication skills
• Friendly online persona and willingness to interact in virtual spaces
• Experience with Brightspace (ideal candidate will have some online course experience)
• Familiarity with Microsoft Word Excel and PowerPoint
• Experience with video creation/editing is a plus but not required
• Willing to learn about online courses and how they differ from in-person
• Dependable professional and organized
• Enthusiastic GCC student with a positive attitude
