Nurse Extern-ICU

Location: Trinity Health Oakland Pontiac MI

Department: ICU - 2 South is 30 bed unit inclusive of Adult Trauma Neuro Cardiothoracic Surgical and Medical ICU patients. (Mixed patient populations).
Employment Type: Contingent - Minimum commitment of 4 shifts per month includes weekend shift. Day Shift and Night Shift available.

Are you a nursing student looking to build your clinical skills in a supportive patient-centered environment As a Contingent Nurse Extern youll work alongside experienced Registered Nurses and interdisciplinary care teams gaining valuable real-world experience while making a meaningful impact on patient care.

In this role youll provide direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse strengthen your clinical judgment and develop the skills necessary for a successful transition into professional nursing practice.

As a Nurse Extern you will:

• Partner with Registered Nurses to deliver high-quality compassionate patient care.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) including bathing feeding mobility and personal care.
• Monitor and report changes in patient condition to the RN promptly.
• Support patient admissions transfers and discharge processes.
• Assist with nutritional support intake monitoring and documentation.
• Provide comfort measures while respecting each patients dignity values cultural preferences and individual needs.
• Participate in patient and family education under RN supervision.
• Apply nursing knowledge and clinical skills gained through your nursing program in a supervised care setting.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to support positive patient outcomes.
• Participate in unit-based initiatives that promote patient safety quality improvement and employee engagement.
• Demonstrate professionalism accountability and commitment to continuous learning.

• Currently enrolled and in good standing at an accredited nursing program.
• Must maintain active student status throughout employment.
• Successfully completed at least two clinical nursing rotations including one Medical-Surgical rotation.
• Enrollment in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program preferred.

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent customer service and patient-centered care mindset.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment.
• Demonstrated adaptability and willingness to learn.
• Ability to work collaboratively with patients families healthcare professionals and support staff.
• Commitment to providing compassionate respectful and culturally responsive care.

This position is performed in a patient care environment and may involve:

• Exposure to communicable diseases bloodborne pathogens and other healthcare-related hazards.
• Frequent standing walking bending reaching pushing and pulling.
• Occasional kneeling crouching squatting crawling and balancing.
• Frequent lifting transferring and moving patients and equipment in accordance with safe patient handling practices.
