How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)

SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As the Manager Engineering - Control Systems you will lead the development integration testing and validation of embedded control systems for HVAC products. This role provides technical and people leadership for control system development activities supporting both new product development and sustaining engineering efforts. You will collaborate across engineering product management operations quality and supply chain functions to deliver innovative reliable and cost-effective control solutions while managing technical resources project execution and supplier relationships.

  1. Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead develop and support a team of Controls Engineers and Lab Technicians.
  • Provide technical guidance mentorship and performance feedback to team members.
  • Promote a culture of innovation accountability collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Support employee development through coaching training and succession planning activities.

  1. Control Systems Development
  • Plan and manage control system development activities aligned with product and technology roadmaps for HVAC products.
  • Develop control hardware and firmware specifications for internal development and external supplier execution.
  • Lead the design integration testing and validation of embedded control systems and associated electronic components.
  • Conduct and oversee design reviews to ensure compliance with product requirements engineering standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Evaluate and approve design changes through Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) within the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.
  • Troubleshoot complex embedded control system issues and support root cause investigations.

3. Testing & Validation

  • Develop and execute test plans for embedded controls wire harnesses sensors motors and other electronic devices.
  • Utilize laboratory equipment including oscilloscopes logic analyzers signal generators and other diagnostic tools to support development and troubleshooting activities.
  • Oversee system validation efforts to ensure performance reliability and compliance requirements are achieved.
  • Support certification testing and regulatory compliance activities including UL and CSA requirements.

4. Project & Supplier Management

  • Manage project schedules budgets resources risks and deliverables to support successful product development execution.
  • Collaborate with Product Management Supply Chain Operations Quality R&D and New Product Introduction (NPI) teams.
  • Develop Bills of Material (BOMs) and support cost optimization initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with suppliers and development partners.
  • Support supplier qualification technical reviews and issue resolution activities.

5. Continuous Improvement

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to control system development processes testing methodologies product quality and team effectiveness.
  • Support the implementation of best practices design standards and engineering processes to improve efficiency and product performance.

What we are looking for (Experience Knowledge Skills Abilities Education)

We each bring something to the table and we are looking for someone who has:

Required Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in embedded control systems development electrical engineering or related technical disciplines.
  • Experience developing integrating and validating embedded control systems.
  • Experience developing control system specifications and test plans.
  • Strong electrical system troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Proficiency with laboratory diagnostic equipment and electronic testing tools.
  • Demonstrated project management experience including planning execution and resource management.
  • Experience leading technical teams and coordinating cross-functional engineering activities.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent written verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Experience Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • HVAC product and system knowledge.
  • Experience with Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and connected products.
  • Knowledge of building automation and communication protocols including Modbus and BACnet.
  • Experience with embedded software development using C/C.
  • Experience with LabVIEW automated testing systems or similar engineering tools.
  • Experience with PCB design and electronic hardware development.
  • Knowledge of UL CSA and other applicable regulatory and certification requirements.
  • Experience managing supplier development and technical partnerships.
  • Familiarity with product lifecycle management (PLM) systems and engineering change processes.

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering Computer Science Controls Engineering or a related technical discipline required.
  • Advanced degree in Engineering Computer Science or Business Administration preferred.
  • Professional certifications related to project management controls engineering or product development are desirable.

Physical Demands

  • Frequent computer and keyboard use; continuous use of computer monitors and engineering software tools.
  • Ability to work in laboratory and manufacturing environments.
  • Occasional lifting of testing equipment components or materials as required.
  • Ability to safely operate laboratory diagnostic and testing equipment.

Travel & Working Environment

  • Primarily office laboratory and manufacturing environments.
  • Occasional exposure to manufacturing conditions including noise heat and moving equipment.
  • Limited travel required (less than 10%) including supplier visits testing activities and support of business operations.
