Job Summary

Cornell Universitys Animal Health Diagnostic Center seeks a Diagnostic Technologist to support the Endocrinology Laboratorys high-volume veterinary diagnostic and research testing services. This position performs a broad range of routine to moderately complex endocrine testing using immunoassay technologies while ensuring accurate timely and high-quality results. The successful candidate is detail-oriented adaptable and comfortable troubleshooting laboratory processes and managing competing priorities in a fast-paced environment. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys hands-on laboratory work and collaborating with technologists laboratory management veterinarians and other stakeholders to support animal and public health.


The job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform diagnostic testing: Conduct routine to moderately complex Endocrinology testing using RIA EIA CIA and related laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
  • Process and manage specimens: Evaluate incoming specimens and test requests perform accessioning and specimen preparation and identify and resolve issues related to sample quality or test requirements.
  • Maintain quality and accuracy: Perform quality control testing monitor assay and instrument performance troubleshoot issues and maintain accurate records in accordance with laboratory quality systems and procedures.
  • Support laboratory operations: Assist with laboratory organization inventory equipment maintenance training LIMS activities and other operational needs while maintaining required safety and regulatory standards.

Employees working in the laboratory/hospital must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire which will be paid for by the department.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in related discipline with up to two years of laboratory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent analytical problem-solving organizational and self-management skills with the ability to prioritize competing demands meet deadlines and work accurately and efficiently.
  • Excellent interpersonal oral and written communication skills with the ability to build strong working relationships work independently and as part of a team and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy including the ability to maintain detailed records and perform laboratory procedures with precision and efficiency.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn advanced functions and new software and systems.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position including but not limited to pushing pulling lifting or carrying up to 20 pounds and sitting or standing for extended periods of time.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using radioactive materials and automated laboratory equipment/analyzers to perform Endocrinology testing.
  • Research experience focused in human or veterinary physiology or endocrinology.
  • Knowledge and understanding of veterinary diagnostic endocrinology.
  • Working knowledge of immunoassay theory and practical understanding in the use of assay validation criteria
  • Experience working within an organization with an established Quality Assurance Program.
  • Experience using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca NY.
  • This is a full-time three-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship now or in the future for this position.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

While the regular business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business requiring employees to work early mornings evenings weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks.
