This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Media & Communications Technician Coastal Experiential Learning Student Specialist for the Marine and Coastal Opportunities (MACO) officeat Oregon State University (OSU).

Decision Making/Impact to University: This position advances MACOs mission to connect OSU students and faculty with meaningful place-based learning opportunities at the Oregon Coast.

• This undergraduate student employee supports the communication promotion and outreach of experiential learning opportunities at Oregon State Universitys Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) and along the Oregon coast.

• This undergraduate student employee position supports MACO staff and collaborates with the MACO student worker team on storytelling digital communications and project coordination with a particular focus on developing and disseminating promotional and engagement materials for coastal courses and other experiential learning opportunities. The student will also support MACOs coastal- and Corvallis-based outreach and engagement activities in collaboration with HMSC and other university partners.

• This position reports directly to the MACO Academic Development Coordinator and provides experience managing communication projects collaborating with university partners and taking increasingresponsibility for outreach and experiential learning initiatives while developing career-ready communication teamwork leadership and professional skills.

Position Duties:

70%: Coastal Experiential Learning Communications Content Development & Project Coordination

Develop and advance communication and promotional efforts for coastal courses and experiential learning opportunities in collaboration with MACO staff HMSC and university partners.

• Collaborate and contribute creatively to identify communication goals and priorities and develop approaches for telling the story of experiential learning at Hatfield and along the Oregon coast. Apply lessons from previous HMSC/MACO communication and promotional efforts to inform new materials and projects.

• Create and develop communication content by documenting experiential learning through photography video interviews and written content. Synthesize collected content into engaging print digital web and promotional materials while exercising professional judgment in instructional and field settings.

• Plan and manage communication projects by establishing priorities and timelines coordinating content collection and development meeting deadlines and maintaining organized and accessible media and project files.

• Maintain and develop coastal learning resources and promotional materials with attention to accuracy accessibility audience and changing program needs. Key projects may include:

  • Coastal Course Roster and course search resources.

  • Resources for Faculty including field-site information 360-degree videography points of contact and field housing resources.

  • Promotional and engagement materials for upcoming coastal courses and experiential learning opportunities.

  • Hatfield tour outreach and Admissions materials including continued development of the Hatfield virtual tour.

• Apply professional communication and technology practices by following OSU branding and digital accessibility standards and effectively using photography videography graphic design web and other digital communication tools.

30% Outreach Peer Engagement & Experiential Learning Support

• Support coastal experiential learning activities and logistics by developing supporting materials helping facilitate courses and field experiences documenting activities through photography and videography and when scheduling permits driving university vehicle. Provide additional program and experiential learning support as assigned

• Participate in and support MACO outreach and engagement activities in Corvallis and at Hatfield including prospective and new student events World Ocean Day tours and other student-facing programs.

• Provide peer advising and student-to-student support through MACOs Peer Advising Program helping undergraduate students explore coastal courses the Hatfield student experience marine internships student organizations and other experiential learning opportunities.

• Build connections and contribute to a welcoming environment by engaging professionally with students faculty staff and community members from different backgrounds and helping connect individuals with appropriate people programs and resources.

• Develop leadership and professional skills through MACO Student Employee professional development training and increasing responsibility for student engagement and program activities. Apply feedback demonstrate initiative and adaptability and contribute effectively to team-based work.

Required Qualifications

• Must be a current undergraduate student at Oregon State University at the time of hire and throughout the duration of the position.

• Demonstrated interest in marine or coastal studies marine biology ocean conservation aquatic biology or ecology environmental sciences experiential education or a related field.

• Knowledge of MACOs mission programs and communication resources.

• Current or prior experience as a student resident at Hatfield Marine Science Center.

• Prior experience as a student employee supporting experiential learning at Hatfield Marine Science Center.

• Experience developing communication or promotional materials such as flyers webpages digital content presentations social media content or other student-facing materials.

• Experience with photography videography interviewing graphic design and/or basic photo and video editing.

• Knowledge of and prior experience using OSU branding digital accessibility and communication standards.

• Proficiency with Canva Microsoft Office and other common communication and collaboration platforms with the ability and willingness to learn new technologies as needed.

• Strong written verbal and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with students faculty staff and university partners.

• Ability to independently manage and prioritize projects demonstrate initiative and attention to detail and seek guidance when appropriate.

• Ability to contribute creative ideas receive and apply feedback collaborate effectively as part of a team and adapt to changing priorities and project needs.

• Valid drivers license and ability to drive university 6- and 12-passenger vehicles and willingness to maintain this status.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with Adobe Creative Suite CapCut Drupal or other relevant design web photo or video editing platforms.

• Experience developing or maintaining webpages and other web-based communication resources.

• Experience with student outreach peer advising experiential learning programs or student-facing events and activities.

• Experience working collaboratively on projects that require creative problem-solving communication and coordination with multiple partners.

• Demonstrated ability to contribute to a welcoming and inclusive learning and working environment.

• Preference will be given to OSU undergraduate students with at least one year remaining in their degree pathway.

15-20 hours per week during the academic school year with the opportunity to increase hours up to 24 hours per week depending on the number of needed projects and events.
In-person (primary) work on Corvallis and/or Hatfield campus. Expected to visit the secondary location (Corvallis or Hatfield) for specific team-building and other events.
Occasional remote work is possible as approved by supervisor and per OSU guidance and policies guiding remote work for students.
Normal hours are Monday through Friday. Work schedule is flexible to accommodate class schedules.
Periodic evening early morning and weekend availability may be required.
This position has no set end date. The end date depends on the chosen candidates eligibility and preference to remain in the job.
Starting hourly rate of $15.05
Periodic travel to Hatfield Marine Science Center may be required. Travel assistance may be provided if needed.
Typical office environment. Part-Time Non-Benefits Eligible.
May be required to maneuver up to 25 pounds of weight including boxes of paper files and/or packages for delivery.
