About the Position

Under normal daily operations this position performs semiskilled subjourney level work involving the maintenance repair remodeling alteration and construction of university buildings facilities and equipment. The position works independently on routine maintenance tasks or under the technical guidance of a journeylevel worker for more complex assignments. Responsibilities also include conducting routine inspections of staterequired regulatory building components.

Tasks include the inspection maintenance and inventory of fire extinguishers across campus. Additional tasks include performing minor repairs to building fixtures plumbing heating systems laundry and kitchen equipment motors and electrical appliances. Duties also include completing minor preventive maintenance tasks to ensure equipment and building components operate safely and efficiently.

Perform Inspections

Tasks include performing inspections of building safety systems and other staterequired regulatory components. Responsibilities include accurately maintaining inspection records and documentation in accordance with regulatory and departmental requirements.

Assist Trades and Maintenance Mechanic 2s

Under the technical direction of a journeylevel trades worker or Maintenance Mechanic 2 performs semiskilled work supporting carpentry plumbing steam fitting electrical mechanical and machinist trades. May assist with the fabrication assembly installation and repair of equipment and materials in trade shops or at job sites in accordance with project requirements.

Operate Tools

Tasks include operating a variety of hand tools power tools and shop equipment as needed to complete maintenance tasks safely efficiently and in accordance with established safety practices.

Operate WWU Equipment

Operate WWU vehicles and equipment to support maintenance activities. Duties include using vehicles to transport tools and materials and operating equipment such as manlifts to safely complete assigned maintenance tasks.

Required Qualifications
  • Two years of general work experience in one or more mechanical trades such as plumbing sheet metal electrical HVAC or automotive/equipment mechanics in a commercial institutional or industrial environment.
  • Ability to read and understand written instructions and information and to communicate clearly using written graphic and verbal methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely use and maintain hand and power tools appropriate to the trade.
  • Ability to manage time effectively work independently and perform under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to use University enterprise software systems for work order management accounting processes and time keeping in accordance with university policies.
  • Valid drivers license or ability to obtain one prior to employment to operate state owned vehicles for travel to work locations.
  • Ability to physically perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in computer use including Microsoft Office applications such as Word Excel and Outlook.
  • Experience using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Experience with the operation and maintenance of commercial institutional or industrial facilities including exposure to one or more of the following skilled trades or systems:
    • Mechanical systems vehicles grounds maintenance equipment and auxiliary generator systems
    • Plumbing
    • Electrical
    • Welding
    • Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
    • Sheet metal
    • Insulation
    • Building controls systems
    • Life safety systems
  • Working knowledge of applicable Washington Administrative Code (WAC) regulations and local building and plumbing codes.
  • Working knowledge of Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) and OSHA rules and regulations standard job safety practices and the proper use of personal protective equipment including respirators.
