General Summary of the Position:

The Lead Software Engineer is directly responsible for the technical leadership and delivery of the Firms next-generation Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and its supporting infrastructure. The position requires performing a wide range of responsibilities related to software architecture full-stack development cloud infrastructure data and system integration security and production support for enterprise applications that serve the Firms highway and infrastructure maintenance operations. This role owns the architecture and end-to-end delivery of a three-layer geospatial (Esri ArcGIS) work-management and agentic-AI platform operating as part of a small AI-native engineering team in which each engineer is equipped with AI coding tools as a force-multiplier rather than a side tool. The Lead Software Engineer sets and enforces engineering standards mentors mid-level engineers and coordinates directly with the Director of Engineering Technology and business stakeholders. It is required to have a technical background in computer science software engineering or a related field or equivalent professional experience. The ideal candidate must have proven experience leading the design and delivery of secure reliable production software; sound judgment about when reliability and security outweigh interface polish; meticulous organizational skills; adaptive analytical problem-solving capabilities; and the ability to build and mentor a high-performing engineering team. The position is remote-first and requires approximately 30% travel to project sites field locations and company or client offices.

Major Process Functions of the Position:

The position requires direct ownership and accountability of the identified processes listed in the accountability table at the end of this description. These processes are organized by the Firms Key Focus Areas and aligned with the Firms Core Values. It is expected the position develops objective Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) directly from these process functions.

5. Manage the annual Career Evaluations for direct reports.
6. Participate in Monthly Financial Review discussions with senior management reviewing engineering and infrastructure cost performance.
7. Coordinate training and development of engineering staff.
8. Participate in required training.
9. Be a dependable and reliable member of the team.
10. Show initiative; seek out work and get the job done without being told.
11. Communicate clearly with the Director of Engineering Technology and other team members.
12. Always safeguard the confidentiality and integrity of company and client data.

Physical Requirements and Environmental Factors:

1. Must be able to perform prolonged periods of focused work at a computer workstation.
2. Must be able to communicate effectively by phone video conference and in writing.
3. Ability to travel (approximately 30%) to project sites field locations and company or client offices.
4. When visiting project or field sites must be able to work outdoors and walk local field terrain in day/night and local climate conditions.
5. When on a job site must wear personal protective equipment and work safely in and around vehicle traffic zones.
6. Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds periodically (e.g. field sensors laptops and related equipment).

Qualifications:

• Technical background in computer science software engineering or a related field and/or eight or more 6 years of professional software engineering experience including technical leadership or end-to-end ownership of a production system.
• Deep expertise in cloud-native backend and data engineering (e.g. Python and PostgreSQL) with strong API design and distributed-systems fundamentals.
• Demonstrated ability to design and operate secure reliable systems - authentication/authorization encryption auditability high availability and disaster recovery.
• Proven fluent use of AI coding agents to accelerate real production work with sound judgment in reviewing directing and verifying AI-generated output.
• Experience owning CI/CD cloud infrastructure and production operations/on-call.
• Real experience using AI coding tools to ship faster and eagerness to push that capability further.
• A versatile generalist able to move across backend data integrations and enough front-end to be effective prioritizing reliability and security over interface polish.
• Experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Google Cloud
• LLM/agent platforms (OpenAI Anthropic Google Gemini etc.).
• Highway infrastructure utilities or field-operations domain experience preferred.
• Strong communication mentoring and leadership abilities; strong oral and written skills.
• Creative and innovative team player with a positive attitude and strong work ethic.
• Speak read write and comprehend the English language.
• Maintain company standards for background checks (i.e. criminal record driving record and controlled substance/drug testing).
• Knowledge and ability to adapt to the latest technology including smartphones and applications.

Work Environment:

• Remote / Home Office (70%): Primary work performed remotely from a suitable home-office environment.
• Project & Field Sites (20%): Travel to project sites and field locations for data collection testing and team working sessions across the region and U.S.
• Company / Client Offices (10%): Professional offices for stakeholder meetings and collaboration.
• This IS a remote-first position; travel is required as described above.

Special Position Requirements:

This position requires both independent and collaborative work. When visiting field or project sites it may involve ranging weather and environmental conditions including high vehicle-traffic operations. All employees must adhere to Jorgensens safety policy employment policies procedures and programs and contribute to the PACT culture. The position also requires strict adherence to information-security and data-handling policies safeguarding the confidentiality and integrity of company and client data.

Work Requirements:

Jorgensen operates a 24 hour / 7 day a week operation. Work schedules will vary by workload client requests location and emergency conditions. All employees are expected to work various schedules and at times assist with emergency situations and perform on-call activities as assigned including a shared engineering on-call rotation for production support.
