Authority

The Instructional Lab Assistant is directly responsible to the Dean of Instruction and works collaboratively with Career Technical Education faculty division/department leadership and other College personnel to support safe effective and continuous instruction across CTE programs.


Position Purpose

The Instructional Lab Assistant provides instructional and laboratory support across Career Technical Education programs. The position is designed to assist full-time instructors in laboratories and related instructional activities and to provide temporary instructional coverage when a full-time CTE instructor is absent or otherwise unavailable as assigned and within the employees qualifications credentials and demonstrated areas of competency.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Major Responsibilities

1. Provide temporary classroom and/or laboratory instructional coverage for full-time CTE instructors when assigned including during short-term absences provided the assignment is within the employees qualifications credentials and demonstrated competency.

2. Assist full-time instructors with hands-on laboratories demonstrations practice activities skills assessments and other instructional activities across all CTE programs as needed.

3. Prepare laboratories shops equipment tools instructional materials consumable supplies and technology for scheduled classes demonstrations and training activities.

4. Support student learning during laboratory and shop activities by reinforcing instructor directions approved procedures course competencies safety requirements and proper use of tools and equipment.

5. Demonstrate safe and appropriate operation of tools machinery trainers equipment software and other instructional resources for which the employee has been trained and authorized.

6. Monitor laboratory and shop environments for safety cleanliness organization and readiness; promptly report unsafe conditions damaged equipment or needed repairs to the appropriate College official.

7. Assist instructors with enforcing applicable safety rules industry standards codes personal protective equipment requirements and College laboratory/shop procedures.

8. Assist with student orientation to laboratory procedures course requirements evaluation methods attendance expectations and other instructional requirements when assigned.

9. When serving as a substitute instructor follow the established syllabus course schedule lesson plans assignments assessments grading expectations and instructional directions provided by the assigned faculty member or Dean of Instruction.

10. When serving as a substitute instructor maintain required attendance instructional and student records and submit documentation according to College procedures and announced deadlines.

11. Assist faculty with preparing instructional materials laboratory activities assignments projects skills checkoffs and examinations as directed.

12. Assist with inventorying receiving organizing storing and maintaining tools equipment materials and supplies used in CTE instructional laboratories and shops.

13. Identify needed laboratory materials consumables equipment repairs software updates and technology support and communicate those needs through established College processes.

14. Assist with routine equipment checks and basic preventive maintenance within the scope of the employees training; refer specialized repairs or service needs to the appropriate personnel or vendor.

15. Support the effective use of current instructional technology computer applications simulation equipment and online learning resources in CTE courses and laboratories.

16. Assist with special industry training workforce training dual enrollment apprenticeship work-based learning co-op and other CTE instructional initiatives as assigned.

17. Assist with CTE recruiting program demonstrations student events open houses career fairs competitions advisory activities and other College outreach efforts.

18. Participate in applicable staff department/division safety inventory planning professional development and other meetings or activities as assigned.

19. Maintain professional competence in assigned technical areas and complete required College safety and industry training.

20. Demonstrate effective communication professionalism ethical conduct dependability integrity and respect in all interactions with students employees industry partners and the public.

21. Comply with policies and procedures of the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees and Reid State Community College.

22. Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Instruction or the President consistent with the responsibilities of the position.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

1. Associate degree from a regionally accredited institution in Industrial Electronics/Electricity Industrial Maintenance Diesel Technology Welding Technology or another related Career Technical Education discipline.

2. Demonstrated knowledge of workplace and laboratory safety practices applicable to career technical instructional environments.

3. Excellent oral written interpersonal and organizational skills.

4. Ability to use standard computer applications and instructional technologies including word processing spreadsheets presentations electronic communication and learning management systems.

5. Ability to work non-standard hours including occasional evening or other adjusted assignments as needed.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant industry experience in one or more CTE fields supported by the College.
  • One to three years of teaching training laboratory assistance apprenticeship or related instructional experience.
  • Current industry-recognized credentials or certifications applicable to one or more CTE disciplines (for example NCCER MSSC AWS ASE OSHA or other appropriate credentials).
