The Role

General Motors is seeking a Power Electronics EMC Technical Specialist to lead electromagnetic compatibility engineering for Power Electronics & Traction Inverter hardware. The successful candidate will apply advanced knowledge of electromagnetic interference electromagnetic susceptibility signal and power integrity high-voltage power electronics and vehicle-level electrical integration to guide robust designs from concept through production.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role. The specialist will influence architecture and design decisions develop practical mitigation strategies lead root-cause investigations and partner with internal engineering teams suppliers test organizations and program leadership. The role is hybrid and based at the GM Global Technical Center Estes Engineering Center.

What Youll Do

  • Define and lead EMC design strategies for Power Electronics & Traction Inverters including requirements decomposition risk assessment design development peer reviews and validation planning.
  • Define design best practices to mitigate system level interactions between component EMC performance and vehicle level EMC requirements.
  • Develop and apply electromagnetic models and analysis methods to predict coupling paths resonances common-mode and differential-mode behavior shielding effectiveness grounding performance and conducted and radiated emissions both at the component level & at the vehicle level
  • Guide Power Electronics & Traction Inverter hardware design decisions involving power modules busbars laminated interconnects gate-drive circuits printed circuit boards enclosures filters shielding grounding cables and connectors.
  • Lead EMC mitigation activities across the design lifecycle balancing electrical performance thermal performance packaging manufacturability reliability cost and timing.
  • Responsible for development of EMC load box and EMC test plan per GMW3097.
  • Schedule execute and document traction inverter EMC testing. Lead PRTS closure through structured root-cause investigations for electromagnetic interference and susceptibility issues using measurement data simulation design-of-experiments and engineering judgment.
  • Establish technical countermeasures and confirm effectiveness through focused testing and correlation between models bench results dynamometer testing and vehicle testing.
  • Develop and maintain EMC operating-mode tracker covering charging driving V2L/V2G AC/DC charging inverter operation and simultaneous APM/OBCM operation. Support EMC debugging for combined operation
  • Partner with Power Electronics & Traction Inverter design release engineering controls and software electrical architecture vehicle integration validation reliability manufacturing purchasing and supplier engineering teams.
  • Analyze grounding shielding cable routing and connector locations. Resolve vehicle-to-vehicle EMC variation.
  • Provide technical direction to suppliers and evaluate supplier EMC capability analysis methods test plans design evidence and corrective actions.
  • Review and approve EMC-related requirements specifications EMC test plan EMC load box drawings analysis reports test procedures test reports and design changes.
  • Create reusable EMC guidelines checklists modeling practices and lessons learned for future Power Electronics & Traction Inverter programs.
  • PRTS ownership of EMC non-compliance related to OBCM component and AC charging system. Lead OBCM troubleshooting/scheduling plan with vehicle EMC team. Communicate technical risks decisions trade-offs and recommendations to engineering and program leadership.
  • Mentor engineers and raise the organizations capability in power-electronics EMC design and troubleshooting.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in electrical engineering electronics engineering or a related discipline.
  • 8 years of relevant hands-on hardware experience with high-voltage power electronics AC/DC and DC/DC converters inverters or electric-drive systems
  • Strong Expertise in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) including high-voltage AC conducted emissions and Radiated Emission compliance Electromagnetic immunity/susceptibility common-mode and differential-mode noise suppression grounding shielding filtering impedance and signal/power integrity analysis.
  • Significant experience designing analyzing or validating EMC performance for power electronics electric drives Power Electronics & Traction Inverters converters or similar high-power systems.
  • Demonstrated expertise in electromagnetic interference and susceptibility mechanisms including conducted and radiated coupling common-mode and differential-mode currents grounding shielding filtering and cable effects.
  • Experience with EMC modeling simulation or analytical methods and the ability to correlate predictions with laboratory and vehicle-level measurements.
  • Strong understanding of high-voltage power-electronics hardware including switching devices power modules gate drives bus structures printed circuit boards and Power Electronics & Traction Inverter packaging.
  • Experience planning executing or interpreting EMC testing and resolving failures through data-driven root-cause analysis.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional technical decisions and influence internal teams and suppliers without direct authority.
  • Strong written verbal and presentation skills including the ability to communicate complex technical issues to leadership.
  • Willingness to travel periodically to supplier test and vehicle-development locations as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree or advanced technical training in electrical engineering electromagnetics power electronics or a related field.
  • 10 years of relevant hands-on hardware experience with high-voltage power electronics AC/DC and DC/DC converters inverters or electric-drive systems
  • Experience with automotive electromagnetic compatibility requirements and vehicle-level integration of electric-drive systems.
  • Experience with 3D electromagnetic simulation circuit/system-level modeling or specialized EMC analysis tools.
  • Experience with Power Electronics & Traction Inverter platforms using silicon carbide or other high-speed switching technologies.
  • Knowledge of high-voltage safety functional safety interfaces electrical transients signal integrity and power integrity.
  • Experience with design-for-EMC methods applied to high-volume manufacturing and supplier production processes.
  • Experience leading EMC issue resolution through design changes calibration software coordination or vehicle integration changes.
  • Demonstrated technical publications patents conference participation or recognized contribution to EMC or power-electronics engineering.

Candidate Success Profile

The strongest candidate will combine deep EMC fundamentals with practical power-electronics hardware experience. They will be able to move fluidly between simulation laboratory measurements design reviews supplier discussions and executive-level risk communication. Success in the first year will include establishing a repeatable Power Electronics & Traction Inverter EMC design and troubleshooting approach reducing late-cycle EMC surprises and providing clear technical direction for GMs High Voltage Power Electronics & Traction Inverter programs.
