Main Purpose of Job

The Geologist III/Remedial Project Manager (RPM) positionwithin the Federal Assessment and Remediation Division provides state oversightfor environmental investigations and remediation at federal facilities. Thisrole requires the application of theoretical and practical knowledge ingeology physics chemistry and mathematics to evaluate site-specific responseactions. The incumbent must be proficient in using geological cross-sectionsmaps and field sampling methodologies. While reporting to a GeologistSupervisor the individual is expected to work independently at headquartersfield sites and off-site meetings.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Perform duties in conjunction with the Department and War and security clearance is required.
  • Ensuring state regulations are addressed during technical investigations.
  • Assessing the nature and extent of contamination across all media with a specific focus on groundwater and the restoration of state water resources.
  • Evaluating potential threats to human health and the environment.


The working conditions for this position include the following:

  • This position requires the physical ability to wear a full-face respirator the completion of a 40-hour health and safety training course and the ability to walk long distances over rough terrain.
  • While not a routine part of the job the incumbent may occasionally be required to visit sites or attend meetings during inclement weather.
  • Inspection of sites potentially contaminated with hazardous substances. These inspections are conducted in accordance with all appropriate procedures and regulations including 29 CFR Part 1910.
  • The useof personal protective equipment (PPE) during on-site inspections. This equipment routinely includes hard-hats and steel-toed shoes and may be upgraded to include respirators and chemical protective gear depending on site-specific conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelors degree from anaccredited college or university in Geology Environmental Geology or a relatedearth science.

Experience: Three years of experience performingprofessional geological work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Mastersdegree from an accredited college or university in Geology EnvironmentalGeology or a related earth science for the required education and one yearof the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forcesmilitary service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higheras a commissioned officer in physical science classification or physicalscience specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year-for-year basisfor the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

It is preferred that the selected candidate has thefollowing:

  • Experience working with the Department of War in an environmental aspect.
  • Experience working with the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA).
  • Bachelors or masters degree in one of the following disciplines: Geology Sedimentology Hydrology Geochemistry Geophysics or Environmental Engineering.

LICENSES REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operators license valid in the State of Maryland.

2. Depending on the assigned essential functions of the work employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain certification as specified in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards-29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. Information about these regulations is available in the Human Resources Office of the Maryland Department of the Environment or may be obtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration Website.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protection equipment such as respiratory protection equipment.

2. Employees in this classification may be subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Regulations (Standards - 29 CFR) 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response.

3. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in on a twenty-four hour basis and therefore will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

4.The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) MedicalMonitoring Program (MMP) is designed to detect health risks or adverse effectsof occupational exposure to hazardous materials and to direct targetedtreatment and occupational illness/injury prevention strategies. MDEemployees who may be exposed to hazardous materials are required to participatein a pre-placement regular and/or post-termination medical has determined that this position be part of the MMP; therefore applicantsselected for employment must successfully complete and pass the medicalmonitoring examination as a condition of employment. Information regarding theMMP is provided by the Maryland Department of the Environment or may beobtained at the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration website.
