Job Summary

Summary

You will serve as an FUL-Administrative Support Assistant for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Windom Wetland Management District in Windom MN Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge in Brussels IL OR Illinois River National Wildlife and Fish Refuges in Havana IL.

Pay will vary based on grade level and/or duty location for which youre selected. First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate.


Duties

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provides guidance and assistance to other staff/stations in all personnel matters including health benefits payroll problems retirement information job opportunities step increases awards and training.
  • Prepares or directs the acquisition of necessary supplies equipment and construction to meet station needs and ensures that purchases are in accordance with Federal procurement regulations and within delegated authority.
  • Trains and assists staff on individual administrative duties including but not limited to purchase card statements fleet statements timesheets and travel.
  • Provides assistance with day-to-day questions regarding various computer applications used by office staff and provides information technology management network administration and technical support in conjunction and consultation with the designated Information Technology Coordinator.
  • Develops and formulates field level budget including estimates justifications and all financial activities for multiple natural resource accounts with extensive sub-activities and/or cross program interagency or grant funding sources.

    As a condition of employment for accepting this position you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period -OR- 2-year trial period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.

    Under applicable law the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies in writing that the individuals employment should continue and that their appointment should be the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period such appointments are terminated.

    Upon completion of your probationary period -OR- trial period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification in writing that your continued employment advances the public interest.
    Qualifications

    All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/15/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. All candidates must also meet Time-in-Grade requirements.

    To receive credit for experience your resume MUST state either full-time (or 40 hours a week) or part-time with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.

    Specialized Experience Requirement: you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the 06 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience: 1) performing budget formulation and financial reconciliation using automated accounting systems; 2) processing procurement actions under applicable guidelines; 3) managing accountable property inventories; and 4) preparing personnel and payroll documentation to support daily field operations. You must include hours per week worked.

    Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community student social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies knowledge and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience including volunteer experience.

    Education

    This position does not allow substituting education for experience.

    This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. The defined vicinity for this position is: A radius of 50 miles from Brussels IL; OR a radius of 75 miles from Havana IL; OR a radius of 75 miles from Windom MN. You must provide proof of residency within the defined vicinity (e.g. mortgage or property deed lease/rental agreement utility bill insurance policy etc.).
