Fabricator Training Aids Technician

Job Summary
The Fabricator / Training Aids Technician is responsible for designing fabricating maintaining transporting and refurbishing aircraft training aids and instructional equipment used within the aviation maintenance training program. This position also supports aircraft acquisition activities including retrieving transporting and preparing aircraft and components for instructional use.
The ideal candidate possesses strong mechanical aptitude metal fabrication skills and a broad understanding of aircraft systems and structures. This individual will play a critical role in ensuring students have access to high-quality hands-on training resources.
Training Aid Fabrication & Maintenance
- Design fabricate and modify aviation training aids to support classroom and laboratory instruction.
- Construct instructional mock-ups cutaways system trainers engine stands and other educational devices.
- Build and repair sheet metal composite wood and welded training structures.
- Refurbish aircraft components for instructional use.
- Assist instructors in developing practical projects and instructional demonstrations.
- Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on existing training aids and shop equipment.
- Maintain an organized inventory of training aids tools materials and consumables.
Aircraft Acquisition & Transportation
- Retrieve aircraft engines and components from airports salvage facilities and vendors.
- Coordinate aircraft disassembly loading transport and unloading activities.
- Operate trailers forklifts and material handling equipment safely.
- Prepare acquired aircraft and components for instructional use.
- Assist in evaluating aircraft and component purchases for suitability as training assets.
Facilities & Operational Support
- Support hangar organization and shop layout projects.
- Assist with campus expansion equipment installation and facility improvements.
- Maintain a safe clean and professional laboratory and hangar environment.
- Support special events exhibits and off-site activities as required.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable safety policies and OSHA requirements.
- Other tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of three (3) years of fabrication maintenance or related technical experience.
- Demonstrated proficiency with hand tools power tools and shop equipment.
- Experience with metal fabrication sheet metal work woodworking welding or mechanical assembly.
- Valid drivers license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to tow trailers and transport equipment.
- Ability to lift and move up to 75 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- FAA Airframe and Powerplant Certificate.
- Previous aviation maintenance experience.
- Experience in aircraft salvage restoration or rebuilding.
- Welding certification or equivalent experience.
- Forklift certification.
- Experience operating trucks and trailers.
- Previous instructional or educational support experience.
- Class A CDL with DOT Medical Card
- Welding credentials from an accredited technical school.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings blueprints and maintenance manuals.
- Proficiency in fabrication techniques including cutting drilling riveting welding and assembly.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent standing bending climbing kneeling and lifting. Minimum 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in hangar shop and outdoor environments.
- Ability to work around aircraft machinery and industrial equipment safely.
Work Environment
Work is performed primarily in aircraft hangars laboratories fabrication shops warehouses and outdoor environments. Regular overnight travel may be required for aircraft retrieval and special projects. Travel is up to 50%.
