Purpose

The Engineering Technician IV leads a survey crew in conductingsurveys for improvement projects and related studies.

Essential Functions

Surveying

  • Set transit lines and gather data for cross-section level data establishing grades based on benchmark data.
  • Conduct surveys relative to grade separation structures major arterials properties street and alley openings sewers water mains tunnel dredging street repairs obstructions land descriptions surveys subdivisions and drainage complaints.
  • Prepare estimates of quantities and costs for proposed paving projects.

Plan Design

  • Assist in preparing designs and construction plans for street and alley paving contracts.
  • Assist in transferring electronically collected data to CADD software to produce preliminary plans for design and sewer reports.

Administrative

  • Organize and maintain both digital and paper files.
  • Measure completed contract work and compile certificates for contractor payments using computer software such as Microsoft Excel Microsoft Word and other relevant tools.
  • Organizes activities for the crew and trains personnel in fieldwork.

Conditions of Employment

The Engineering Technician IV must be willing and able to dothe following:

  • Physical ability to stand walk climb crouch crawl push and pull and perform repetitive motions.
  • Ability to wear appropriate safety equipment including safety shoes glasses and hearing protection.
  • Ability to withstand variable indoor and outdoor environmental conditions such as temperature changes rain and snow.
  • Ability to perform medium physical activity exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 100 pounds of force frequently to move objects.

The pre-employment medical tests include:

  • Physical Exam
  • Vision Exam
  • Audio-Gram

Minimum Requirements

1. Associate degree in civil engineering or an engineeringfield from an accredited college or universityANDtwo years ofsurveying and transportation design engineering experience.

OR

Four years of surveying and transportation designengineering experience.

2. Valid drivers license and good driving record atthe time of appointment and throughout the employment.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may beconsidered; however there is no substitution for two years of related workexperience.

Knowledge Skills Abilities & Other Characteristics

Technical

  • Knowledge of surveying standards and procedures.
  • Knowledgeof street and alley design criteria.
  • Ability to use survey equipment including total station data collector level/leveling rod and engineering tape.
  • Knowledge of and proficient use of MicroStation and/or Civil 3D drafting software.
  • Ability to effectively use computer programs such as the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of street design criteria codes and design techniques.
  • Skill in the preparation of cost estimates.
  • Ability to produce and interpret detailed and accurate technical drawings and documents.
  • Ability to read and apply work-related materials such as governmental regulations and City ordinances.

Interpersonal and Communication

  • Verbal communication skills to effectively communicate with other staff members and management.
  • Written communication skills including the ability to write technical reports and general business correspondence.
  • Ability to work cooperatively effectively and fairly with coworkers and residents whose backgrounds may differ from ones own.

Judgment and Professionalism

  • Knowledge of project management practices.
  • Ability to use and analyze information to evaluate options and determine the best solution.
  • Ability to plan organize and work on multiple projects independently managing priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to set clear expectations provide guidance and ensure projects meet expectations and deadlines.
  • Ability to act in a lead capacity to manage train and guide others to ensure adherence to project specifications and safety protocols.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Honesty and the ability to use City resources responsibly.

Current Salary

The current salary range (Pay Range 3TN) is$68389-$87738annuallyand the current resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residentsis$71125-$91247 annually.Appointment above the minimum ispossible based upon level of experience and other qualifications and is subjectto approval.
