Description of Work

POSITION NUMBER WILL BE FILLED FROM THIS POSTING.

This intermediate-level position will serve as a project inspector on roadway and structure projects supporting higher level technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts. This position is responsible for monitoring contractors daily operations to ensure compliance with the contract plans and specifications. Specific duties will include but are not limited to observing and documenting the contractors operations making measurements and calculations of pay quantities and performing standardized sampling and testing. The employee may be expected to either work independently or as a part of a larger team of Department employees and consultant inspectors. Position will also ensure compliance with both NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements. The employee must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform sampling and testing. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

In this position you may be exposed to hazards including construction equipment high traffic volumes and heights over water or traffic. You will be expected to work outside in extreme temperature and weather conditions. You will be expected to perform moderate physical activity such as walking climbing kneeling and be able to lift 50 pounds. You may need to work nights weekends and holidays as required for assigned projects in Division 2. Safety toe shoes are needed for this position.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

The selected candidate will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Management prefers applicants with the following:


  • Knowledge and understanding of NCDOT highway and bridge construction
  • Knowledge of contracts plans standards and specifications
  • Experience in sampling and testing materials to evaluate acceptance
  • Skill in evaluating and applying engineering judgement to construction plans contract provisions and inspection procedures
  • Experience in maintaining neat legible and accurate records and reports including computer/iPad entry


Minimum Education and Experience

Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
