Responsibilities:

- Directly manage Mechanical and Controls Engineers; set expectations run one-on-ones conduct performance reviews and invest in each persons development.

- Actively participate in recruiting interviewing and onboarding new engineers as the team grows; partner with the President on staffing plans and hiring decisions.

- Foster a team-first culture where people support each other across disciplines.

- Own the engineering schedule budget and resource plan for active projects; coordinate with Program Management Production and Sales to keep work on track.

- Interface directly with customers on technical matters-design reviews progress updates acceptance testing.

- Manage BOMs purchased component costs and engineering labor hours; flag risks early.

- Provide management with weekly status updates on all active projects including schedule budget and risk.

- Develop and track KPIs for the engineering department to measure project performance and drive continuous improvement.

- Support commissioning and field debug when needed.

- Build and maintain productive relationships with vendors and third-party solution providers.

- Evaluate outside service providers set clear expectations and hold them accountable to commitments on quality schedule and cost.

- Establish and maintain engineering standards-CAD practices drawing standards controls programming templates design review processes.

- Lead design reviews and provide meaningful technical feedback that improves the teams output.

- Make or approve critical decisions on component selection machine architecture and vendor choices.

- Identify and implement better workflows tools and tracking systems to improve how the engineering department plans and executes work.

- Lead post-project reviews and ensure lessons learned are captured and acted upon.

- Spend a meaningful portion of time doing hands-on engineering work-concepting design analysis build support-particularly at critical project milestones.

- Bring own technical depth (mechanical or controls) to bear on the hardest problems the team faces.

- Travel: up to 10%-domestic customer sites and occasional international travel.

Requirements:

- Understand the components that go into a purpose-built machine-linear guides actuators ball screws cam followers sensors pneumatic and hydraulic components structural frames and the like know what these components do and how to specify them

- Familiar with industrial controls hardware-PLCs servo drives motors HMIs CNC controllers robots and sensors-at least to the level of understanding how they integrate into a custom machine-do not need to be a programmer but need to speak the language

- Read and interpret mechanical engineering drawings including GD&T-ability to read electrical schematics is a strong plus

- Working familiarity with industrial standards such as UL NFPA and basic ergonomic principles as they apply to machine design

- Proficiency with 3D CAD modeling software is required (SolidWorks Inventor or equivalent)

- Experience programming PLCs is required (company currently use Allen-Bradley and are transitioning to Keyence for the primary controls platform; other brands are used on occasion)

- Managed large complex projects end-to-end-schedules budgets customer interfaces resource planning and progress tracking
