Engineering Intern

The Department of Public Works (DPW) Infrastructure engineering and construction staff providesstructural maintenance and inspection services throughout the City ofMilwaukee including the design project management inspection and evaluationof 180 bridge structures 200 buildings over 1400 miles of paved streets andover 2400 miles of sewers.

The Engineering Intern position is a fixed-term role withinthe City of Milwaukee. Engineering Interns may work during the summer and/oryear-round and are eligible to apply for transfer/promotional opportunitiesprior to completion of the internship.

Engineering Interns assist engineers architectsengineering technicians and public works inspectorswith variousengineering and construction inspection tasks.

Engineering Interns could be assigned to any of the following DPW sections: Environmental Engineering Traffic Engineering ConstructionStructural Design or Architecture.

• Assist engineers with record keeping design plans specifications and field inspections.
• Assist engineering technicians with field work and record keeping.
• Assist Department of Public Works (DPW) inspectors with project inspections and record keeping.
• Input data to maintain the City of Milwaukee Road Life files.
• Assist in the distribution of notices to property owners around construction sites.
• Assist engineers with the review of televised sewer exams.
• Assist engineers with sewer and stormwater management calculations.
• Assist field technicians with outfall testing smoke and dye testing and sanitary flow monitoring.
• Conduct traffic counts and/or complete streets activities.
• Assist with the collection of traffic data including signing and marking.

• Must be able to work outdoors in variable weather conditions for extended periods of time.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 10 pounds of equipment or materials.
• Ability To walk long distances.
• Ability to stand for long periods of time.
• Ability to climb stairs.

1. Current enrollment as a sophomore or higher in an accredited college or university in pre-civil engineering construction management civil engineering architecture or a closely related program.
2. Valid drivers license at the time of appointment and throughout employment.

• Experience using ArcGIS MicroStation and Microsoft Office software.
• Knowledge of methods used in roadway and underground utilities construction.

Technical

• Knowledge of engineering analysis and design methods.
• Knowledge of mathematics such as arithmetic algebra geometry calculus and statistics.
• Ability to make accurate calculations.
• Proficient with word processing and spreadsheet software and the Internet.
• Ability to use measurement tools related to surveying and checking transfer of line and grade including tape measures measuring wheels string lines and levels.
• Ability to read and interpret work-related documents.

The current wage rate (PR 9PN) is$20.54per hourand the resident incentive wage rate for City of Milwaukee residents is$21.36perhour.

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job-related and willconsist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of educationexperience and/or responses to supplemental questions; a written or performancetest a structured interview or other assessment methods. The Department ofEmployee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualifiedcandidates to structured interviews and performance examinations. Structuredinterviews may include written exercises. Selection process component weightswill be determined by further analysis of the job.

The applicant isresponsible for attending all phases of the job selection process at the timeand place designated by the City of Milwaukee. Employment may be possibleimmediately following the examination provided positions are available at thattime. The names of successful candidates will be placed on the eligible list ina rank determined by the final grade without reference to the date of theexamination. The names of candidates who pass all phases of the selectionprocess may remain on an eligible list resulting from a continuous examinationfor up to six months.
