Waltham Public Schools is seeking an enthusiastic and student-centeredLong-Term Substitute .4 FTE Elementary Strings Teacherto join our Fine and Performing Arts Department. This position is atwo-day-per-week assignment on Tuesdays and Wednesdaysand is based at theWaltham Dual Language School.

The teacher will provide engaging strings instruction to elementary students including beginning and developing instrumentalists. We are looking for an educator who can create a welcoming environment where students build foundational technique musicianship confidence creativity and a positive musical identity.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with school staff families and the district Fine and Performing Arts Department to ensure students experience high-quality inclusive and joyful music instruction.

• Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university.

• Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education licensure appropriate to the assignment preferred.

• Demonstrated knowledge and competence in strings and/or instrumental music education.

• Experience teaching beginning string players preferred.

• Experience working with elementary-aged students preferred.

The successful candidate should demonstrate:

• Strong knowledge of string pedagogy and beginning instrumental instruction.

• Ability to teach foundational skills including instrument care posture tone production note reading rhythm ensemble skills and musical expression.

• Effective classroom and ensemble management.

• Ability to plan engaging standards-aligned instruction.

• Knowledge of the Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Framework.

• Ability to differentiate instruction for students with varied learning needs musical backgrounds and levels of experience.

• Commitment to equity inclusion culturally responsive teaching and appreciation of diversity.

• Strong interpersonal organizational and communication skills.

• Ability to establish positive relationships with students families colleagues and administrators.

• Appropriate integration of instructional technology when beneficial to student learning.

• Plan and deliver engaging elementary strings instruction appropriate to students developmental and musical levels.

• Support beginning and developing string players in building strong foundational skills and musicianship.

• Establish clear learning goals and provide students with meaningful opportunities to demonstrate growth.

• Use varied instructional strategies to support individual learners and ensemble development.

• Assess student learning and provide effective feedback.

• Maintain a safe organized inclusive and student-centered learning environment.

• Utilize instruments materials and instructional equipment appropriately.

• Align instruction with the Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Framework and Waltham Public Schools Fine and Performing Arts expectations.

• Create a welcoming environment where students feel safe taking musical risks and developing their skills.

• Build positive relationships with students of varied backgrounds identities abilities and levels of musical experience.

• Encourage student confidence creativity responsibility collaboration and musical independence.

• Establish and maintain clear expectations for respectful participation and care of instruments and materials.

• Support the academic social and emotional well-being of students.

• Collaborate effectively with building administrators classroom teachers Fine and Performing Arts colleagues and other school staff.

• Communicate professionally with students families colleagues and administrators.

• Maintain appropriate student records and complete required responsibilities in a timely manner.

• Follow district procedures and School Committee policies.

• Maintain student confidentiality and professional ethical standards.

• Participate in required meetings and professional responsibilities associated with the assignment.

Supervises assigned students and evaluates their progress and achievement.

Supervised by the building principal and/or the Director of Fine and Performing Arts.

• This is a.4 FTE long-term substitute position.

• The assignment isTuesdays and Wednesdays only.

• The position runs fromAugust 31 through November 25 2026.

• The assignment focuses exclusively onelementary strings instruction.

• The position is based at theWaltham Dual Language School.
