Director, Engineering

JOB SUMMARY:

Oversees the activities and efforts of the Mechanical Sustaining and Quality Assurance groups in areas of conformity corrective action product and process improvement and training for all of the high technology ride and show attractions at Universal Orlando. Establishes and prioritizes the overall goals objectives and initiatives of the Engineering department. Maintain a highly skilled and motivated group of Managers Supervisors Engineers Designers and Inspectors to provide improvements in safety and compliance increased ride reliability with improved cost of ownership and improved quality experience for both guests and employees. Establishes and maintains cost controls to keep spending within Engineerings assigned budget. Ensures that the Engineering group(s) works with the attractions to identify define and prioritize capital issues to realize optimum cost-of-ownership of Universal Orlandos assets in Rides and Shows.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Oversees the activities and efforts of the Mechanical Sustaining and Quality Assurance Group. Establishes the overall goals and priorities of the department to achieve the highest standards of safety and reliability. Inspires customer service attitude and instills a tradition of continuous process improvement throughout the Engineering group(s). Emphasizes reduced cost-of-ownership of the Rides and Attractions through superior engineering and cost savings through improvements in preventative maintenance effectiveness and effective cost avoidance through proactive measures to reduce equipment failures and collateral damage.
• Ensures that re-engineering tasks NDT inspections and Quality audits for the Rides and Attractions are performed to the highest standards of safety reliability and quality. Insures compliance with all applicable codes regulations and standards including: AISC ASME ASTM ANSI AWS JIC NEC and OSHA among others.
• Assures that department staffing requirements are managed properly and effectively. Encourages and promotes the efforts of Managers Supervisors and Senior Engineers in areas of scheduling training coaching counseling rewards and recognition to the extent allowed by Company Policies and Technical Service guidelines. Develops and implements succession planning within the department.
• Coordinates and facilitates inter and intra-department partners and external resources including: Attraction maintenance group(s) Document Control Environmental Health and Safety Facilities Finance Human Resources Landscape and Water Quality Operations Outside Vendors and Security. Maintain and encourage within subordinates close and friendly working relationships; model by example.
• Manages spending to stay within assigned budget and provide maximum value - Establishes budget controls within the department groups to keep spending within assigned budget guidelines; minimizes overtime worked. Assists in identifying and developing budget plans for tasks and projects that reduce cost of ownership of the attractions.
• Participates in applicable information sessions design reviews staff meetings safety meetings and other sessions that assure and encourage communications teamwork and continuing process improvement.
• Understands and actively participates in Environmental Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy procedures training and team member involvement activities.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

• Bachelors degree from an accredited four year college or university in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field required
• Other: Secondary or post graduate degrees preferred

EXPERIENCE:

• 10 years in management experience in an Engineering environment focused primarily on project management and re-engineering of dynamically aggressive ride and show systems
• Areas of proficiency to include electrical and controls; hydraulic mechanical and structural systems; preferably in a theme park environment
• Or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
