Citizenship / Access Requirements: Applicants generally must be U.S. citizens or nationals or lawful permanent residents seeking U.S. citizenship. Non-U.S. citizens require applicable DOJ access waivers. Personnel must also satisfy the DOJ residency requirement of qualifying U.S. residence or federal overseas service for three of the previous five years unless formally waived.
Security Requirements: Must successfully complete BOP/DOJ institutional-security and suitability processing before beginning work. Processing may include a Public Trust investigation at the risk level assigned by DOJ security questionnaires fingerprinting law-enforcement and employment checks identity verification a credit check when applicable release forms and urinalysis when applicable.
Type of Employment: Full-Time Contract Position.
Estimated Compensation: $28.80 per hour.
Working Hours: Eight one-hour sessions per day for each Dental Assistant normally Monday through Friday from 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM with a 30-minute unpaid lunch excluding federal holidays. Each employee may work up to 40 hours per week. The Health Services Administrator will establish the actual schedule.
Work Arrangement: On-site at FCI/FPC Herlong primarily within the Health Services Department. Remote work is not authorized.
Period of Performance: Date of award through 12 months with four potential additional 12-month performance periods and a possible six-month extension for a potential total of 66 months.
Paid Sick Leave: Accrues at one hour for every 30 hours worked up to 56 hours annually.
Paid Time Off / Vacation: Two weeks (80 hours) after one year of service; three weeks after eight years; four weeks after 15 years.
Paid Federal Holidays: Eleven paid holidays annually.
Summary of Services
The Dental Assistant will provide chair-side radiographic sterilization preventive records and routine clinical support to the Dental Officer at FCI Herlong. Two full-time Dental Assistants are required to support restorative care oral surgery periodontics prosthetics examinations emergency treatment and other authorized dental services in a secure correctional environment.
Mandatory Qualifications
Must possess specialty dental-assisting training provided by a licensed dentist and/or certification from an accredited Dental Assistant school.
Required training must include dental radiology and radiation safety.
Must maintain current CPR certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
Must have at least two years of experience providing Dental Assistant services.
Must be able to collect and track data enter information in the agencys electronic system support patient scheduling and maintain confidential patient records.
Must be able to work professionally with an inmate population representing varied cultural regional racial and ethnic backgrounds.
Bilingual oral communication skills and experience in a clinical correctional setting are preferred but not required.
Must satisfy all BOP/DOJ background institutional-security suitability residency and access requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assist the Dental Officer with restorative dentistry oral surgery periodontics prosthetics examinations and emergency cases.
Retrieve dental records prepare treatment rooms seat patients and prepare patients for the attending Dental Officer.
Prepare and pass instruments materials medications and supplies; retract tissue; irrigate the oral cavity; and operate suction equipment.
Observe patient responses assist with dismissal and provide instructions for subsequent appointments as directed.
Document treatment accurately in electronic and paper dental records and support patient-care scheduling and data tracking.
Provide dental-health education and perform dental screening charting prophylaxis temporary fillings or other expanded functions only when appropriately credentialed and authorized.
Prepare patients for periodontal procedures and place or remove packs and rubber dams as directed and permitted.
Clean sharpen disinfect and sterilize instruments and manage contaminated biological waste according to infection-control requirements.
Inspect and maintain dental equipment perform minor authorized repairs and report defective equipment promptly.
Take diagnostic dental radiographs using standard and digital equipment position patients correctly minimize radiation exposure and save images to patient records.
Perform radiographic quality assurance and maintain infection-control procedures during imaging.
Make primary impressions pour casts select shades and assist with fabrication or repair of removable dental prostheses as authorized.
Maintain patient confidentiality professional boundaries and compliance with BOP security and correctional healthcare procedures.
Wear navy-blue scrubs or professional attire appropriate to the correctional environment; scrubs are preferred.
