Collection Development and Scholarly Communications Librarian

Position Summary

The Collection Developmentand Scholarly CommunicationsLibrarian will serve a dual role focusing onhealth sciences and healthcarescholarly communicationssupportand overseeing collection development within the Woodruff Health Sciences CenterLibrary(WHSCL). Reporting to the ResearchInformationist the librarian will contribute to enhancing research publishing and scholarly impactfor health sciences researchersanduse their knowledge of scholarly communications and research trends todevelopand maintaina library collection that meets thediverseand evolvingneeds of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center.

In the area of scholarly communications this librarian willworkwith faculty researchers clinicians and students to improve the visibility accessibility and impact oftheirscholarlywork. The librarian willprovideexpert guidanceonhealth sciences relatedscholarly publishingopen access research metrics and compliance with funder requirements while supporting services that promote research dissemination evaluation and responsible scholarship. The librarianwill work closely with colleagues across thelibrary especially the Library Office of Scholarly Communicationsand with campus partners to align efforts with institutional priorities in research excellence and knowledge sharing.

Thisrolealsoencompasses the primary responsibility for collection development within the Woodruff Health Sciences Center closely withWHSCL colleagues and the Director of Collections and Open Strategiesthe librarian willoverseea collection development budget ofover$5 millionmanagingthe selection acquisition and review of information resources in all formats with a particular focus on electronic resources. This includesparticipatinginpricingnegotiationswith vendors and ensuring the collection aligns with the evolving needs of the health sciences community. The librarian will also play a key role in developing and refining the librarys health sciences resources to support faculty staff and student needs as well asthose ofEmory Healthcare.

EssentialResponsibilities

Scholarly Communications

• Foster increased awareness of publishing options and author rights including journalselection Creative Commons licensing andopenaccessauthoragreements. Help students and researchers on the health sciences campus build knowledge of publishing options and how each choice will affect distribution and rights to their work.
• Monitor the scholarly communications landscapein the health sciences including related legislative funding and publishing trends and metrics. Assess trends and communicate implications acrossthe Health Sciences Libraryandwhereappropriate incorporate into policies and documentation.
• Assistresearchers with compliance with funder public access policies including NIH Public Access Policy and other federal or foundation requirements.
• Promote awareness of emerging trends in scholarly communication including open science datamanagement andsharing and evolving publishing modelsto health sciences librarians and theWoodruffHealth Sciences CenterCommunity.
• Partner withand attend meetingsofthe Scholarly CommunicationsOfficein the Libraryto foster collaboration andbring awareness to current health science trendsin scholarly communications.
• Design and deliver workshops seminars and instructional sessions on scholarly communication topics such as:

      • Author rights and copyright
      • Researchimpact andvisibility
• Develop online learning materials research guides and tutorials supporting scholarly communication services.
• Conduct outreach activities to increase awareness of library services supporting research and publishing
• Participatein the LibrarysAsk USservice answering questions related to collections andscholarly communications.

Collection Development and Management

• Stewarda collection budget of approximately $5 milliontoensure judicious andtimelyexpenditure of funds.
• Coordinate withRobert W. Woodruff Library staffto ensure effective planning acquisition and ongoing management of jointly managed collections and shared resources(e.g. major journal packages).
• Provide leadership in selecting/developing thelibrarysinformation resources in all formats with an emphasis on electronic resources;thistaskincludes selection acquisition and review of health sciencesand clinicalresources.
• Maintain quality andmonitoroverall growth and development of the collection;identifyresources for renewal cancellation withdrawal or relocationfor both the Woodruff Health Sciences Center and Emory Healthcare.
• Provide leadership to developmonitorand revise collecting policies that guide materialselectionanddeselection to build a balanced collection that servestheneeds of the health sciences community.
• Negotiate pricing withvendorsfor resources in all formatsandworkwithRobert W. WoodruffLibrarystaff as needed todeterminepermissible use parameters and ensureappropriate universityreview of licenses.
• Maintain overall awareness of the curricular needsandresearch and clinical interests of the faculty in health sciencesschoolsand departmentstoidentifycollection needs;monitorgrant awards research initiatives centers of excellence new degree programs etc.
• Performregular assessment tomaintainsustainable and usable collections for thehealthsciencesfaculty and students in consultation withWHSCLInformationists.
• Monitor the latest emerging technology (e.g. AI) trends and tools in information discovery and scholarly communications to provide guidance on use and to informcollectiondecisions on AI-based and otherplatforms.

Collaboration and Professional Engagement

• Participate in library committees initiatives and cross-functional teams.
• Collaborate with campus partners including research offices academic departments and other library units.
• Engage in professional development and scholarship related to scholarlycommunications collection developmentand health sciences librarianship.
• Participatein local state regionaland/or international professional or scholarly associations.
• Adhereto guidelines outlined in theHandbook Governing the LibrarianSeriesfor Faculty-Equivalent Librarians to ensure appointment appointment renewaland promotion-in-rank.

Required Qualifications

• ALAaccreditedMLIS or equivalent or a combination of relevant education and library experience.
• Oneyear or moreexperiencein collection development or scholarly communications.
• Knowledge of scholarly communication practices includingopen accessand current publishing trends.
• Proficiencywith library technologies research tools information resources and standard office applications.
• Strong collaboration and communication skillsfor working with faculty staff students and clinicians.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Collection Development managing collection development budget and vendor negotiations.
