Job Description

The CMT Inspector 2 oversees daily laboratory operations and quality programs related to the testing of concrete soils aggregates asphalt fireproofing shotcrete and other construction materials. This role provides technical leadership and quality oversight for major infrastructure projects including the Bull Run Filtration Facility Stack Infrastructure Data Centers municipal on-call programs and ODOT ADA improvement projects. Responsibilities include managing laboratory staff coordinating testing schedules and deliverables ensuring compliance with accreditation requirements and maintaining adherence to industry standards and quality procedures. The Laboratory Manager reviews testing data prepares technical reports supports audits and accreditation activities and works closely with project managers engineers clients and regulatory agencies. The ideal candidate is a strong leader with experience in construction materials testing laboratory quality management systems and personnel development along with a commitment to safety and continuous improvement.

Core Responsibilities

  • Direct and oversee laboratory team members in the proper use of testing procedures and equipment to ensure work is completed in accordance with project scopes industry standards and performance expectations.
  • Provide leadership and technical oversight for the sampling and testing of soils aggregates concrete masonry reinforcing steel and asphalt in accordance with ASTM AASHTO and other applicable standards.
  • Promote and enforce a strong safety culture by ensuring compliance with safety policies conducting pre-task planning and supporting safe work practices across all laboratory operations.
  • Coordinate with project managers engineers schedulers and subconsultants to manage laboratory schedules deadlines deliverables contract requirements and client expectations.
  • Review and prepare accurate laboratory reports testing documentation and technical records in a timely manner.
  • Analyze test results to verify the accuracy applicability and reasonableness of laboratory data and findings.
  • Compile maintain and manage testing data using Microsoft Office applications and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Perform and facilitate quality control reviews on laboratory deliverables to ensure compliance with Atlas quality standards and standard operating procedures.
  • Establish performance goals identify training and development opportunities and support career growth for assigned CMT laboratory team members.
  • Conduct employee performance reviews assess staffing needs and assist with recruiting and onboarding efforts for laboratory personnel.
  • Implement and maintain the Quality Management System in compliance with AMRL AASHTO CCRL and OregonDOT accreditation requirements.
  • Manage accreditation programs coordinate laboratory audits and ensure ongoing compliance with all applicable quality and regulatory standards.

  • Associates or Bachelors degree in Science Engineering or a related field required; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a Construction Materials Testing (CMT) laboratory environment.
  • Experience testing concrete soils aggregates asphalt and other construction materials in accordance with applicable industry standards.
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills with the ability to work effectively across departments and project teams.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a focus on accuracy and quality.
  • Demonstrated growth mindset with the ability to adapt learn and support the development of others.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents testing procedures project specifications and scientific reports.
  • Strong technical writing skills with the ability to prepare concise accurate and well-organized reports.
  • Ability to mentor train and support the development of laboratory staff and technicians.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Word Excel and Outlook.
  • Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and other laboratory software applications.
  • Valid drivers license required upon hire.
  • Current ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician certification preferred.
  • Current ACI Fresh Concrete Testing Technician certification preferred.
  • ODOT Quality Concrete Testing certification or other relevant CMT SI or materials testing certifications preferred.
  • Strong computer skills with the ability to effectively utilize laboratory databases reporting systems and quality management tools.
  • Commitment to safety quality assurance and adherence to established laboratory procedures and industry standards.
