CHS Science Olympiad Advisor

Chelan High School is seeking a dedicated enthusiastic and organized Science Olympiad Advisor to lead and mentor our high school team. The Advisor guides students through rigorous academic preparation engineering build projects and laboratory challenges fostering a culture of scientific inquiry teamwork and problem-solving. This role involves recruiting team members facilitating weekly practices managing tournament logistics and accompanying the team to regional and state Science Olympiad competitions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Student Mentorship & Team Leadership
• Recruit select and organize students to form balanced competitive teams across 23 standard Science Olympiad events (spanning life science earth science chemistry physics and engineering).
• Facilitate regular after-school practice sessions providing guidance study materials and technical advice.
• Cultivate a safe inclusive and collaborative environment that encourages curiosity resilience and academic integrity.
• Competition Preparation & Technical Coaching
• Help students interpret official event rules scoring rubrics and technical specifications.
• Oversee hands-on build projects (e.g. bridges flight devices robotics) ensuring compliance with construction rules and safety standards.
• Supervise laboratory practice sessions enforcing proper safety protocols equipment usage and chemical handling.

Administration & Logistics:

• Register the CHS team with Washington Science Olympiad and manage all regional/state competition documentation.
• Coordinate transportation chaperone coverage event day schedules and student medical/permission forms.
• Manage the team budget including ordering study resources build materials test kits and lab consumables.
• Maintain clear communication with parents school administrators and the district activities department regarding schedules and expectations.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Required

• High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelors degree in a STEM field or Education strongly preferred).
• Demonstrated passion for science technology engineering and mathematics education.
• Strong organizational time-management and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to pass a Washington State Patrol and FBI fingerprint background check.
• Valid CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).

Preferred

• Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate (endorsement in Secondary Science preferred).
• Prior experience with Science Olympiad STEM competitions or extracurricular coaching.
• Familiarity with Chelan High School policies and district administrative procedures.

Schedule & Working Conditions:

• Season: October through April (varies depending on advancement to state competition).
• Environment: Secondary classroom laboratory and workshop environments; local and regional travel for competitions.

Compensation:

• Stipend is $2750 per season.
