SummaryDescription:
The CampsitePrograms and Conservation Manager is the resource for campsite development andmanagement for the Appalachian Mountain Club.
Thispositions primary responsibility is all campsite program operations at theAMCs White and Mahoosuc mountain sites. The Caretaker program is a powerfulcore Trails program and is founded on the dual principle of hands-onstewardship and user education in high-use backcountry areas. The management ofthis program includes recruiting hiring training and supervising seasonalstaff maintenance and long-term planning of campsite infrastructure and theoversight of the Group Use Outreach program. It is a position with a highdegree of commitment to public service and landscape conservation.
The CampsitePrograms and Conservation Manager also serves as a resource for sustainablecampsite design and human waste management for the Club including expansion ofcampsites along the Connecticut River Paddlers Trail in Massachusetts andassisting with campsite development in other locations.
Due to thelocation of most campsites along the Appalachian Trail as well as theinteraction with long distance hikers this position serves as the Clubrepresentative to the Appalachian Trail Conservancys Regional PartnershipCommittee. The position also has the responsibility for engaging withbackcountry and wilderness recreation management issues in Northern New Hampshireand Western Maine as well as other parts of the AMC region as needed. Theposition also collaborates with AMCs policy team and with regional coalitionsto support AMCs conservation initiatives throughout Northern New England.
This is afull-time benefited position. The Campsite Programs and Conservation Manager ispart of the hard working and creative thinking team of the Trails Departmentbased out of Pinkham Notch.
Responsibilities:
White Mountain and Mahoosuc Campsite and Caretaker Program (70%):
- Recruiting training and overseeing of 15 seasonal employees
- Manages departmental budget including tracking of expenses andyear-end reporting of use and finances. Work with Director of Trails andRecreation Management on fundraising and grant applications.
- Focus backcountry campsite staff on delivery of high qualitypublic service resource protection and stewardship. Effectively communicateprogram objectives with backcountry caretakers other AMC staff and keycooperators.
- Manage new campsite and shelter construction and re-constructionprojects site repair and maintenance in the White and Mahoosuc with contractors and vendors as required. Ensure high-quality work andwork within budget.
- Oversee Group Outreach Program led by Group Outreach Coordinator.
Conservation Programs (20%):
- Manage AMCs corridor monitoring and maintenance program in theMahoosuc Mountains.
- Organize and implement Trails department airlifting safe procedures are being followed.
- Applies expertise in land recreation and wilderness management toconservation initiatives polices and positions including coordination andpresentation of written and oral statements.
- Working with Federal and State agencies cooperators andacademia address issues relating to recreational use and natural resourcemanagement planning including considerations unique to the Appalachian Trailand in Wilderness Areas.
- Serve as Club Representative to the Appalachian TrailConservancys Regional Partnership Committee in New England.
- Support emerging grassroots community conservation efforts inNorthern New Hampshire where appropriate.
Other (10%):
- Lead and/or serve as a resource for campsite developmentinitiatives across AMCs region including front-country camping and watertrails.
- Serve on internal and external committees as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualificationsand Experience:
- Excellentsupervisory leadership and field management skills.
- Extensiveknowledge of backcountry recreation management and natural resource managementpolicies procedures and planning.
- Strongcommunication motivation and organizational skills.
- Familiaritywith Microsoft Office software email and internet software.
- Flexibleteam player with an ability to also work independently with an attention todetail and a sense of humor
- Bachelorsdegree and several years experience in related field preferred.
- WildernessFirst Responder certification is desirable
- Leave-No-TraceMaster Educator certification desirable.
- Mustbe capable of safely traveling alone in the backcountry long distances carryingloads in excess of 40 pounds during all seasons and weather conditions.
- Willingnessto travel throughout the Northeast and work evenings and weekends.
