Montgomery County Public Schools in Virginia has an immediate opening and is accepting applications for a Forensics Director position that is available at Blacksburg High School for the 2026-2027 school year.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The High School Forensics Director is responsible for organizing directing and supervising the schools competitive forensics program. The Forensics Director provides instruction and guidance to students participating in speech debate interpretation and other applicable forensics events and prepares students for competitions in accordance with Virginia High School League (VHSL) school division and applicable tournament rules.
The Forensics Director promotes effective communication critical thinking research public speaking teamwork professionalism and good sportsmanship while maintaining a safe inclusive and educational environment for all participants.
This assignment is a supplemental assignment for a designated period of time and is compensated in accordance with the School Board-approved supplement schedule. It is not a separate salaried position. The supplement compensates the individual for the successful completion of the responsibilities associated with the designated assignment during the designated period from October 1 2026 through April 1 2027. If the individual begins the assignment after the designated period has started resigns or is removed from the assignment before completion or otherwise does not fulfill the assignment for the entire designated period the supplement may be prorated as appropriate. Appointment to this supplemental assignment does not guarantee appointment or reappointment to the same or any other supplemental assignment in a subsequent school year.
The Forensics Director reports directly to the Principal or designee and works collaboratively with school administration the activities/athletics administration as applicable students parents/guardians other coaches and sponsors and school division personnel.
The Forensics Director represents the school and school division when participating in competitions tournaments meetings and other activities associated with the forensics program.
Licensure/Certifications:
- Meet all school division and VHSL requirements applicable to coaches or activity sponsors.
- Complete required training certifications and background checks prior to beginning the assignment.
- Maintain any required certifications or training throughout the designated assignment period.
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Must be 21 or older.
- College coursework or degree in education communication English theatre debate public speaking or a related field preferred.
Experience:
- Experience in competitive forensics speech debate theatre public speaking communications coaching teaching or a related area preferred.
- Experience working effectively with high school students is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to teach coach motivate and provide constructive feedback to students.
- Ability to organize practices competitions travel student entries and other program activities.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous successful coaching experience in Forensics
- Previous experience working with high school-age students.
- Current teacher or staff member of Montgomery County Public Schools
Supplemental:$2336.25 - $3395.10 (depending on experience) PER SEASON (October 1 through April 1)
FLSA:Non-Exempt
