Backhoe Operator (Westlake, LA)

R.J. Corman Switching Company is currently seeking a Backhoe Operator/Laborer to join our team in Westlake LA.

Responsibilities:

• Operates specialized equipment in support of inspection installation and maintenance of railroad track.
• Operate specialized equipment (i.e. backhoe etc.).
• Performs preventative maintenance on heavy or specialized equipment.
• Maintains proper equipment appearance and cleanliness.
• May perform labor duties as needed.
• Communicates with supervisor throughout the job process.
• Ensures working conditions are safe and that proper PPE is being used as job duties require.
• Follow DOT regulations ensuring proper permits and driving regulations are followed.

Specialized or Technical Knowledge or Education and Experience:

• Demonstrated operation experience and equipment knowledge.
• Basic mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot simple mechanical failures.
• Knowledge of DOT regulations permits and driving regulations.
• Demonstrated operation experience and equipment knowledge.
• Previous experience in railroad construction or maintenance preferred.

Physical Requirements:

• Able to perform physically strenuous work.
• Able to frequently bend stoop kneel and crouch.
• Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Requires occasional use of a 30 lb claw bar to remove spikes requiring application of 50 lbs of force.
• Requires occasional use of a 10 lb sledge hammer to drive spikes requiring application of 75 lbs of force.
• Able to walk climb and maintain balance on equipment stairs ladders uneven terrain rails and ballast in a safe manner.
• Able to navigate into confined spaces if necessary.

Environmental Conditions:

• Work is performed outside in varying types of environmental conditions.
• Must carry out responsibilities in a fast-paced outside railroad/construction environment.
• Requires efficient development and performance of processes.
• Requires ability to multitask in a time-sensitive environment.
• High-visibility position requiring professional demeanor in interactions with supervisors employees contractors and customers.
