Automation Engineer IT & Business Systems
Austin, TX - USA
Job Summary
Summary
The Automation Engineer designs builds and maintains the applications integrations and automations that make Austin IT and its business partners measurably faster. The role is grounded in real software engineering and is platform-agnostic by design drawing on programming and scripting open-source tooling AI-driven automation low-code platforms and modern integration methods and selecting the right technology for each problem rather than defaulting to one product. It turns manual repetitive workflows into reliable supported solutions and applies that same automation discipline inward to reduce the operational and compliance overhead that IT itself carries.
This is a build-anchored role. Roughly 70% of the work is development integration and enterprise-solution delivery; the remaining 30% is hands-on IT support weighted toward the systems and automations this role helps create. The position suits an engineer who would rather remove a recurring problem permanently than resolve the same ticket twice.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Other duties may be assigned. Responsibilities are grouped by the two areas of focus below.
Software Development and Automation (70%)
Design build test and maintain custom applications services and scripts using modern programming languages and frameworks including open-source stacks to solve problems that off-the-shelf and low-code tools cannot.
Integrate systems that were not designed to talk to each other using REST APIs JSON webhooks and modern authentication patterns with structured error handling logging and monitoring.
Design query and optimize the relational databases and data models that underpin custom applications integrations and reporting.
Automate workflows across business platforms including the enterprise ITSM/ticketing system using API-based connectivity and RPA where appropriate extending to data-platform and data-warehouse integrations.
Develop AI-driven automation and agent tooling (for example LLM agents AI connectors and emerging agent standards such as MCP) to extend existing systems and use AI to accelerate the development work itself.
Where it is the right fit for a simpler workflow deliver low-code solutions (for example Power Platform) and reporting treated as one option among many rather than the default.
Stand up and maintain supporting infrastructure and services where it advances automation including Linux and virtualization (for example Proxmox) monitoring and dashboards (for example Grafana) and network services.
Automate internal IT operations including onboarding and offboarding imaging access provisioning and asset workflows through scripting with the deliberate aim of reducing recurring support volume and freeing team capacity for higher-value work.
Build tooling that automates the collection of compliance evidence access reviews and control attestations lowering the manual effort the department spends on audit and regulatory obligations while keeping the resulting records defensible.
Own full solution lifecycle: requirements design build test structured Dev/Test/Prod deployment and post-deployment monitoring alerting and data-integrity checks.
Produce documentation runbooks and training so that solutions can be operated and supported by others not only by their author.
Partner with business stakeholders and Enterprise IT to identify automation opportunities and translate them into scoped sized and sequenced work.
IT Support (30%)
Provide Tier-2 and Tier-3 support weighted toward the applications integrations and automations this role helps deliver.
Support endpoint and asset operations including imaging onboarding patching and decommissioning and identify candidates for automation as they recur.
Perform identity and access administration: provisioning and deprovisioning group and role-based access changes and tenant hygiene.
Coordinate with the managed service provider (MSP) on escalations and handoffs allowing the internal team to focus on engineering work.
Contribute to the support rotation so that build days remain protected across the team rather than continuously interrupted.
General Responsibilities
Maintain current in-depth knowledge of the platforms and technologies for the role through formal or self-directed development.
Drive continuous improvement through trend analysis and metrics including measurable reduction of manual effort and ticket volume via automation.
Communicate status issues and risks clearly to the IT Manager and stakeholders and maintain a visible backlog of build work.
Exchange knowledge and reusable solutions with other Jabil sites and functional teams to support enterprise-wide adoption.
Ensure adherence to all company policies and procedures including Health Safety Quality and Security requirements.
Perform other duties and special projects as assigned including exploratory and proof-of-concept work outside the standard toolset.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelors degree in Computer Science Management Information Systems Information Technology or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Typically 3 to 5 years of hands-on experience building automating and integrating systems across more than one platform or environment with some Tier-2 support foundation.
Strong software development ability: writing testing and maintaining production-quality code in one or more modern programming languages (for example Python) comfortable with open-source stacks and not limited to any single vendor or low-code product.
Automation as a core competency: the ability to remove manual repetitive work through scripting integration and orchestration and to choose the right approach for the problem.
Fluency with integration fundamentals: REST APIs JSON webhooks and authentication patterns.
Solid understanding of database technology: relational data modeling SQL and query design and optimization.
Practical use of AI to build and accelerate automation: LLM agents AI connectors and AI-assisted development applied to real workflow knowledge and support problems.
Proficiency scripting in Python and PowerShell and comfort working across both Linux and Windows.
Experience with an enterprise ITSM or ticketing platform and building integrations or automations against it.
Source control and CI/CD discipline using Azure DevOps Git and Atlassian (Jira).
Networking fundamentals: VLANs routing firewall rules and troubleshooting connectivity end to end.
Working understanding of enterprise single sign-on (for example Okta). Day-to-day SSO administration sits outside this role but the person must be able to design integrate and troubleshoot against it.
