Boeing Defense Space & Security (BDS) is seeking an Astrodynamicist to join our Astrodynamics Team located in El Segundo CA. This early-career position offers the opportunity to work within a highly collaborative team environment as part of the Astrodynamics group under the Mission Systems Engineering & Operations department in Space Mission Systems. Designed as a non-senior role it requires flexibility to learn and operate beyond traditional definitions of astrodynamics encompassing a broader range of orbital analysis and mission systems engineering responsibilities.

Position Responsibilities:

  • The team are the Rocket Scientists in the Mission Control Center responsible for flying satellites with a primary focus on orbit mechanics mission analysis and operations though the role extends beyond the traditional non-Boeing definition of Astrodynamics.

  • Located in El Segundo this group is a recognizedcenter of excellence built on decades of accumulated knowledge and historical learnings fostering continuous improvement and collaboration across multiple programs.

  • As part of a highly motivated team members perform astrodynamics analyses including transfer orbit design propellant budgeting mission planning and station keeping design and analysis.

  • Interact closely with customers launch vehicle providers subsystem leads and program management supporting trade studies and new business across all orbit regimes (GEO LEO MEO cis-lunar).

  • The environment encompasses concept design proposal phases through to on-orbit mission operationsparticipating actively in mission activities from launch transfer orbits to in-orbit support.

  • Spacecraft systems engineering responsibilities include defining and flowing requirements between subsystems and astrodynamics to support mission design as well as designing mission-specific analysis and operational tools.

  • Identify software requirements and support implementation of specialized astrodynamics software tools.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the listed location.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • This position requires the ability to obtain a US Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship as a condition of employment: Ability to Obtain Tier 5 (formerly SSBI) - Post-Start

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Engineering Technology (including Manufacturing Technology) Computer Science Data Science Mathematics Physics Chemistry or non-US equivalent qualifications directly related to the work statement

  • Academic or professional experience (2 years) with Orbital Mechanics Mission Analysis & Design Spacecraft Operations or System engineering

  • Basic coding skills and familiarity with MATLAB or equivalent software

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Mechanical Engineering or Physics

  • BS 2 to 4 years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience i.e. Masters Degree in Aerospace or Systems Engineering with specialization in Astronautics Spacecraft Systems Orbital/Celestial Mechanics

  • Real-world experience working on cross-discipline engineering teams is desirable including time spent in a mission control environment

  • Experience with creating tools in MATLAB for solving orbital or other engineering problems

Typical Education/Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology) computer science engineering data science mathematics physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 2 or more years related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience or non-US equivalent the USA ABET accreditation is the preferred although not required accreditation standard
