Note: All positions with Santa Fe Public Schools require a background check and orientation/training session. Some positions have additional requirements as established by federal or state rules and regulations.


General Function:

Assigned to one school site for the duration of the contract period. Assists with classroom instruction in the absence of a teacher. Follows and teaches lesson plans for any class and subject for the days required by site administrator. Aids students in understanding subject matter and ensures that regular classroom routines are followed in accordance with the goals and directives of the school district and state.

Education/Training/Experience:

Minimum: High school diploma or possess or be able to obtain aNew Mexico Substitute Teaching License or New Mexico Teaching License.

Preferred: Bachelors Degree or higher degree. Bilingual: English - Spanish.


Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:

Follow oral and written directions. Understand and follow lesson plans. Establish effective working relationships with staff and students. Set the proper tone from the beginning of any class for effective classroom management. Flexible friendly and good at establishing quick rapport with students. Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality when dealing with student staff and/or parent information. Embraces variety by willingly serving in any class/subject in the absence of regular teacher/coach.


Essential Job Functions:

Performs all functions in accordance with established policies procedures safety and environmental regulations facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization. Current essential responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Report to office upon arrival at school to receive work assignment; check mailbox of absent teacher for materials requiring immediate attention; request clarification of school rules and procedures if necessary.
  2. Implement or create district/school lesson plans while ensuring the integrity of academic time and in a manner that motivates students to learn and participate.
  3. Institutes and communicates clear objectives for all lessons assignments units and projects in accordance with curriculum goals.
  4. Organize students for effective instruction.
  5. Report all student injuries accidents illnesses and discipline problems to the appropriate authority immediately or as soon as is reasonably possible.
  6. Supervise students out of class such as in the hallways and in the cafeteria.
  7. Dismiss all students from the learning environment before leaving.
  8. Collect and place students papers in regular teachers desk.
  9. Return instructional materials equipment and keys to proper place.
  10. Respect and maintain confidentiality of student and school personnel information.
  11. Maintain discipline and classroom control that fosters a safe and positive learning environment for all students and staff in accordance with school policies.
  12. Ensure the adequate supervision to assure health welfare and safety of all students.
  13. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
  14. Cooperateswith staff and support personnel in helping students with health attitude learning and behavioral problems.
  15. Utilizes technology in the classroom to include computers projection devices calculators etc.
  16. Perform other related duties as assigned by building administrator(s) in accordance with distrtict/school/state policies and practices.
  17. Other duties as assigned.


Salary Range:

$22774 to $40594

Medical dental and vision benefits are available to full and part-time employees that work a minimum of 20 hours per week.


Resources Used in Performing Job Include (but are not limited to):

A wide variety of instructional materials and resources including electronic/digital equipment. Standard office and classroom equipment including computers tablets apps copiers phone systems and software such as Microsoft Office and the Google Suite.

Physical/Cognitive Requirements:

Perform duties typically in school settings to include: classrooms gymnasium cafeteria auditorium and recreational areas. Frequent walking standing stooping lifting up to approximately 30 pounds and occasional lifting of equipment may be required; other physical activities may be required. Functional computer literacy. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities. Regular instruction to special needs children may be necessary Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Daily personal and close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required on assigned days. Regular contact with other staff members and building administrator(s) is required on assigned days as a substitute.

Environmental Conditions:

Duties performed typically in school settings. Substitute will be subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions noise and hazards.

  2. Properly notifies supervisor and/or designee of absences or tardiness.
  3. Begins and completes work within the allotted time.
  4. Consistently appears in attire appropriate to the work environment.
  5. Demonstrates skill in the use of equipment including its capabilities limitations and appropriate/ special application.
  6. Protects the districts resources through appropriate and careful use of supplies and equipment.
  7. Utilizes appropriate body mechanics to aid in the prevention of muscle strain/injury.
