Backend Software Engineer

What will you be working on

• Drive automation and centralisation across partner pricing and billing systems.

• Build and extend reconciliation systems that ensure pricing and billing accuracy for partners.

• Design and implement automated controls around pricing and billing supporting compliance requirements and financial integrity.

• Deliver secure solutions for complex partner requirements with a long-term architectural perspective.

Technical responsibilities

• Design and build features end-to-end across pricing and billing services.

• Contribute to architectural decisions and code reviews helping raise the bar on quality reliability and observability.

• Improve the resilience and scalability of systems that support external partners and financial operations.

• Work with event-driven architectures including Kafka alongside MongoDB and MariaDB to build auditable extensible and performant systems.

• Use AI tooling in the development lifecycle to support delivery and code quality.

Technical excellence

• Strong software engineering fundamentals and a track record of contributing significantly to impactful projects.

• Experience with Java or a similar object-oriented programming language.

• Ability to design systems with a longer-term approach using patterns that allow safe iteration and scaling.

• Accountability within your team for the availability reliability and security of the systems you build.

• Good judgement in balancing speed scalability and risk with resilience and safety in mind.

• Ability to address technical debt pragmatically and plan work within an appropriate risk appetite.

• Commitment to engineering best practices across observability security testing and responsible data and event usage.

Ownership and product mindset

• Ownership of technical deliverables across projects from design through production.

• Ability to explain why something is being built what partner or business problem it solves and what outcome is expected.

• Comfort with long-term ownership of systems while collaborating to reduce single points of failure.

• Willingness to take an active role in incident resolution and post-incident learning.

• Focus on predictable delivery and a healthy engineering cadence.

• Participation in on-call support for your area when needed.

Influence and collaboration

• Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively across functions to achieve team goals.

• Mentor and support other engineers in the team.

• Help onboard new engineers when needed.

• Promote collaboration that reduces duplicate work and improves shared understanding.

• Contribute to broader engineering efforts communities or guilds across Wise.

• Participate in hiring processes and interviews using Wise interviewing practices.

Nice to have

• Experience in payments fintech billing or another regulated financial domain.

• Experience working with external partners or B2B integrations where correctness and auditability matter.

• Experience with systems involving compliance audit or regulatory requirements.

• Familiarity with event-driven architectures reconciliation systems or configuration-heavy domains.

Additional Information :

We are currently only considering local candidates as relocation support is not provided. For local candidates we are able to support transfer of visa sponsorship.
