Senior Cloud Hardware Dev Engineer Rack Integration, Network Product Development

Key job responsibilities
Rack Integration Development Engineers own the end-to-end rack interconnect product lifecycle from concept and design through validation manufacturing operations and end of life. This role is a technical leader who works in ambiguous situations where product requirements and specifications are not yet fully defined driving rack-level integration solutions that meet AWS quality cost and performance standards at scale.
Own the full product lifecycle for rack interconnect systems including defining requirements designing solutions validating performance selecting manufacturing approaches and driving production quality from concept through deprecation.
Lead rack integration test strategy and execution covering optical interconnects Active Electrical Cables (AEC) fiber testing and loopback testing across rack configurations. Create test plans that thoroughly validate designs and efficiently address system integration challenges.
Develop and maintain Python-based test automation frameworks for rack-level validation characterization and regression testing. Drive continuous improvement to reduce failure rates and lifecycle degradation.
Manage strategic partnerships with manufacturing partners defining and implementing engineering standards and quality frameworks. Serve as the key technical authority and escalation lead driving manufacturing yield improvements and resolving complex technical challenges.
Own operational production performance of rack interconnect systems. Deliver continuous improvement to reduce failure rates and ensure system availability and uptime.
Create mechanisms to reduce repeat issues and optimize best practices across rack integration processes and methodologies.

On an everyday basis as an engineer or scientist in our team you have the unique opportunity to understand the growing AWS network and our internal customers requirement on interconnect solutions and work backwards to devise hardware solutions by influencing the broad industry and/or to develop software tools with partner teams to maintain a highly available network that delights AWS customers. You design and implement processes and mechanisms that both help the team to deliver business impact to the organization in a systemic way while also helping to raise the bar on our operational excellence.

Youll bridge design construction and operations ensuring that every layer of physical networkingfrom fiber trunks to copper patching meets high standards of performance reliability and scalability.

About the team
Within AWS Networking the Network Product Development (NPD) organization is responsible for designing the hardware building the software and owning the interconnects for the routers that power the global AWS network. Beyond product delivery we actively manage the fleet or routers in a network that grows by 70% annually. This means tracking key business and operational metrics to ensure that we operate smoothly and minimize or eliminate customer impact due to device related issues for a transparent AWS customer experience.

- Bachelors degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Physics Computer Engineering or equivalent work experience.
- 5 years of work experience in optical communication systems rack-level integration data center hardware validation or networking hardware development.
- 3 years of experience with optical transceivers active electrical cables (AEC) DACs and related IEEE standards developing test automation frameworks and scripts for hardware validation and characterization.
- 3 years of experience working with manufacturing partners on rack-level or system-level manufacturing processes test development and qualifications. Professional development experience with Python for test automation and scripting.
- Experience owning end-to-end product lifecycle from concept through production and operations.

- Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Physics Computer Engineering or equivalent work experience.
- Demonstrated mastery of system architecture and understanding of multiple hardware disciplines (electrical optical mechanical manufacturing validation reliability).
- Experience managing strategic partnerships with manufacturing partners defining engineering standards and quality frameworks adopted across partner organizations.
- Expertise in rack interconnect test methodologies including loopback testing fiber characterization and AEC validation at system and rack level.
- Experience with design and manufacturing of pluggable optics AEC and DACs (i.e. SFP SFP QSFP QSFP-DD OSFP) at the rack integration level.
- Track record of leading cross-functional teams and driving complex technical decisions that impact product quality and time-to-market.
