The Critical Facilities Engineer operates manages maintains and repairs HVAC systems critical and non-critical power systems plumbing fire control and suppression systems roofing exterior grounds and all related vendor-supported activities within a mission-critical data center environment.
A key focus of this role is the safe reliable and efficient maintenance of HVAC and cooling infrastructure including chilled water systems CRAC/CRAH units air handling equipment refrigeration components pumps valves controls and associated Building Monitoring System alarms. The role is expected to support preventive maintenance troubleshooting root-cause analysis corrective actions and continuous improvement of cooling performance to ensure optimal environmental conditions for critical IT operations.
This fast-paced role supports overall Data Center operations by maintaining and improving critical infrastructure through scheduled maintenance ad hoc repairs inspections and technical troubleshooting with particular attention to HVAC reliability energy efficiency operational resilience and compliance with safety standards.
Demonstrate strong technical leadership by building an engaged confident team and maintaining clear operational oversight. Provide weekly management updates on preventive maintenance corrective actions risks upcoming work and HVAC-related reliability priorities.
Proactively plan and lead engineering drills review vendor reports monitor cooling system trends and conduct regular team meetings to address operational challenges lessons learned and continuous improvements across mechanical and environmental systems.
Maintain full ownership of the change management process by submitting and reviewing change requests within the agreed customer notice period ensuring timely approvals thorough risk assessments MOP creation and effective coordination with stakeholders and vendors to support safe compliant and resilient operations.
- Completes all maintenance protocols plans and site checks on time and accurately including daily weekly and monthly inspections.
- Performs planned preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical electrical HVAC cooling and special systems.
- Troubleshoots HVAC and environmental issues including cooling performance airflow temperature and humidity control alarms leaks and equipment faults.
- Supports the maintenance of chilled water systems CRAC/CRAH units air handling units pumps valves controls refrigeration components and associated mechanical equipment.
- Makes minor changes to mechanical electrical HVAC and special systems where required and within approved procedures.
- Addresses reports resolves and investigates major failures significant problems and delays contributing to root-cause analysis and corrective action plans.
- Ensures that sufficient spare parts are available on site for frequently used parts or parts with long lead times maintaining an accurate critical spares register.
- Monitors and responds to BMS alarms in accordance with engineering policies and procedures with particular attention to environmental and cooling-related alerts.
- Maintains plumbing and fire suppression systems.
- Coordinates with vendors to ensure maintenance activities are carried out in line with Equinix requirements with a strong focus on HVAC cooling mechanical and electrical infrastructure.
- Reviews vendor maintenance reports service records and recommendations related to HVAC systems electrical systems and critical facilities equipment.
- Edits and tracks the work approval process for service providers including briefing at the start of work control of work during the day and final review of completed work.
- Recommends changes and updates to technical files for plant and equipment in cooperation with vendors and supervisors ensuring as-built drawings and technical documentation remain accurate and up to date.
- Creates engineering scripts switching schedules and method statements to support safe operations and planned maintenance activities.
- Ensures all Equinix safety standards are followed during HVAC mechanical electrical and critical infrastructure maintenance.
- Ensures quality procedures related to preventive maintenance corrective maintenance incident response and change management are consistently applied.
- Supports correct incident management processes especially for cooling degradation HVAC alarms electrical events environmental deviations and service-impacting infrastructure issues.
- Reviews processes procedures and systems communicating deviations and proposed improvements to support operational resilience and continuous improvement.
- Develops training materials and supports training of Data Center employees in relevant engineering topics with emphasis on HVAC maintenance cooling reliability BMS response and safe electrical awareness.
- Strong hands-on experience in HVAC maintenance mechanical systems and cooling infrastructure ideally within data centers critical environments industrial sites hospitals hotels manufacturing plants or large commercial buildings.
- Good working knowledge of chilled water systems CRAC/CRAH units air handling units pumps valves controls refrigeration components airflow management temperature and humidity control and BMS alarm response.
- Solid understanding of electrical infrastructure and safe electrical working practices including critical and non-critical power systems generators UPS systems switchgear and distribution equipment.
- Understanding of relevant codes compliance regulations safe work requirements risk assessments method statements and permit-to-work processes.
- Familiarity with technical documents such as design drawings schematics data sheets technical manuals maintenance plans and as-built documentation.
- Relevant experience may include building or facility maintenance HVAC technician roles mechanical maintenance electrical maintenance generator repair aircraft mechanics automotive mechanics or other hands-on technical backgrounds.
- Refrigeration handling certification is preferred; electrical or mechanical license is also preferred.
- Strong troubleshooting mindset with the ability to diagnose and resolve HVAC mechanical environmental and electrical infrastructure issues in a timely and safe manner.
- Able to perform all essential job functions including walking standing bending stooping climbing lifting and manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to work days nights weekends and holidays when needed or required.
- Familiar with common applications needed to perform daily tasks including CMMS CRMs productivity software and drawing or drafting software.
- Skilled at working in alignment with relevant safety measures operational procedures and critical environment standards.
- Skilled at communicating with and managing vendors especially for HVAC maintenance cooling performance electrical works and technical service delivery.
- Able to communicate effectively with others including oral and written instructions incident reporting maintenance updates and escalation of technical risks.
- Knowledge of Swedish is considered a plus.
- Excellent problem-solving teamwork ownership and continuous improvement skills.
